Majestic Major Transmission

Hello all,
I'm trying to locate a few seals for my Majestic Major gearbox but I suspect my first step should be to identify what the transmission it is. All literature and websites I've come across say the Majestic Major came with a BW DG 12. Outside of the sites I've mentioned no one lists a DG12 as even being a transmission. My transmission tag reads BW DG 250M. That I can find info on but I'm curious what all the DG 12 is about. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks
Doug

Hello Doug,

You should have a 3-speed BW type 12 auto box for a RWD vehicle

The DG stands for Detroit General or Detroit Gear, which is where the early boxes were made - as such you need only refer to your transmission as a BW12 unit.

I have attached a link to assist you.

Regards.

Richard.

I am afraid that Classiclife's post is wrong. Your query results from someone having conflated two Borg Warner transmissions - the DG which was used in many British cars from c.1954 to about 1964 , (thereafter being replaced by the BW35 in engines up to about 3 litres and the Model 8 in larger units )and the much later BorgWarner model 12 which appeared with the V12 Jaguars in c.1971

The correct box for the MM is the one you have which is the BW DG250

Thanks guys. I happen to have a spare transmission in my basement from a 1972 Checker Marathon and coincidentally it is a Borg Warner 12. Certainly nothing like the Borg Warner Detroit Gear 250M in my Daimler. I suspect one site published the wrong info and it just continued after that.

Cheers
Doug

Chris,
I corrected Wiki and one other site, that was verbatim from Wiki. The reference to the Detroit Gear 12 came from a book, The Daimler Tradition, by Brian E Smith. I haven't read that book to see what it states but FATSCO, a big source for BW parts, never heard of a BW DG12. As for the BW 12, not produced by Detroit Gear Division, that transmission did not come out until 1967.

Richard, your link to https://www.automaticchoice.com/en/transmission-parts# was useful. If you select Daimler MM, 4.5 L it indeed comes up with the DG250.
