LQ2/20 Carburettor help please.

Post by JedFurneaux »

Hi all,
My 1934 LQ2/20 is fitted with a bronze bodied SU HV3 carb. The number on the alloy tag on the float chamber is AU 960. This Winter I am thinking of taking it off for an overhaul. On ebay there are nice looking carburettor overhaul kits for the LQ offered by 'Historic car parts' of Macclesfield including a new jet specified as an 'S6' however according to my 1964 edition of SU's catalogue for BMC cars (including older marques like Daimler & Alvis) the jet should be one of three: P6 (rich), P61 (standard) or P5 (weak). Confusingly the HV3 carburettor specified in this list for the 1933/36 LQ2's is AUC 209! I know the obvious way forward is to take mine to bits and see what's in it at the mo but owing to the discrepancy in the 'AUC' numbers I can't even say for certain if the carb on mine is the correct one.
Can anyone with extensive knowledge of these engines assist please?
PS. I have tried to message 'Historic car parts' on the ebay system but apparently they do not interact with customers this way (?!) and I can't find any other means to contact them.

Hello,

I do not have knowledge of these cars at all, sorry.

However, you may be better placed to contact Burlen Services: http://sucarb.co.uk/?___store=su and ask them to confirm the correct spec. In addition they will be able to supply support advice. I have always found them very helpful with numerous and not always straight forward enquiries.

An eBay company that does not have a Q&A facility is unacceptable in my book, personally - happy to take your money but not that happy to field questions. Shame on them and I certainly would not be giving them my custom; as I said, purely a personal stance.

Good luck.

Regards.

Richard.

A search on Burlen's website suggests AUC 209 is correct for your car HV3 Carburettor for a Daimler 20 H.P PV & LQ 1933-36
Part Number: AUC 209

Description: HV3 Carburettor for a Daimler 20 H.P PV & LQ 1933-36

Availability: Temporarily out of stock

CLICK TO BACK ORDER

PLEASE ASK
HV3 Carburettor for a Daimler 20 H.P PV & LQ 1933-36
S6 is the quoted standard needle

The AUC 960 is for a Rover P4 and is a HD6 type carb of the 50's. AU 960 is not known. http://burlen.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=AUC+960

Jed, Have you looked in the LQ2/20 Parts Book TC78? Page 10 and 11 relate to the carburettor. Just for the record, the Lanchester 15/18 and 18 used the same HV3 SU unit.
Burlen rebuilt my Lanchester's one in 2016 for £250.00 + vat. All the best, Ranald

Thanks, Ranald.
My parts book is TC 89 but I guess they are all pretty much the same. The book gives the needle as P61 which agrees with my SU catalogue but not with Burlen! The HV3 was used by many Daimlers, Lanchesters and other pre war cars but they all have different 'AUC' numbers. The correct one for mine is apparently AUC 209 but the one specified for the Lanchester 18 of 1932/34 is AUC 138. That sounds like a reasonable price and is useful to know.
Very best wishes,
Jeremy.

Update: Having taken the carb off now and ordered a new rebuild kit and P61 needle from Burlen I will rebuild the carb over the next week or so. Interestingly the needle that was in there was a number 4 which is the standard fitment for the '15' engine!
