The stainless steel exhausts on my SP250 and on my V8 250 certainly did change the exhaust note. At first it is a bit harsh to the ear but over time it mellows, I guess as a bit of crud builds up on the inside of the tubes. That is a bit disappointing when you first fit the system but after time and given they are both as sound as a pound after 12 and 9 years respectively it is well worth the extra cost for the less fuss over the years. Not sure why, but with both an SP and a DJ256 I can't say that the sound has been louder in either, when they were new some years ago. The SP's system came from SES (Stainless Exhaust Specialist) and included the manifolds (4:2:1); while the Century's was from P D Gough. I recommend both ++++. I fitted both of them myself, but that was many years ago, how many I've forgotten althoiugh it's probably in their records. What I do remember is that in both cars fitting was easier than any previous mild steel system I'd ever fitted earlier, a dream by comparison in fact. No contact with the chassis anywhere, no great difficulty aligning flanges etc.

I inadvertantly reversed the Century tailpipe into a tree stump last year, not quickly. The wood sealed the tailpipe so completely that the manifolds to head and downpipe gaskets blew, but there has been no other damage that I've been able to find other than a couple of original pattern rubber block silencer hangers that sheared. But I have replacements. I think the tailpipe has been driven in to the rear box a couple of inches, and I've yet to pull it back out. Having had to dismantle the entire induction system and exhaust manifolds I'm still completing the rebuild having replaced the block core plugs, engine mounts and radiator hoses while there was adequate access, but the downpipes and both manifolds have mated again without too much trouble. I did some time ago make up an extra rigid bracket for the lower section of the downpipe, supported off the two bottom backplate bolts, in order to reduce stress on the manifold flanges which may have helped, but the entire system to the rear of that appears completely intact. All will be clear when get it running again, perhaps?

A brief tale to illustrate the benefit of buying a quality system.
