Hi Forum members,
I have a 1949 DB18 that has lost its original number plate. Sadly it now wears an A prefix modern style number plate. I recall that the DVLA will swap these for a more appropriate age related plate however I cannot find any online information that describes how to proceed. Has any member gone down this road and if so can they summarise the process? No doubt there is a form to complete but which one?!
Thanks
Marcus

securing an age related plate for my A prefix DB 18
Re: securing an age related plate for my A prefix DB 18
Is the original number plate still in use somewhere on another car? If not, and if you have suitable evidence linking the original plate to your car you can possibly apply to the DVLA to have it reassigned to your car.

Do you know what the original number was and have you any documents proving it? ~ JohnR

Re: securing an age related plate for my A prefix DB 18
I tried to do this many years ago and DVLA said they would put the number up as available for sale and ask for bids, if I were to bid for it and win I could have the number. As it was a very desirable/saleable number, a risky way of probably losing it to a big cheque book buyer, so I gave up.
I sold the vehicle some years later and told the new owner the story, he has since managed with the owners clubs help to persuade DVLA to restore the number all be it none transferable.
The Austin ten drivers club have a specialist who was able to persuade DVLA to give way, not sure how. I am sure I have seen somewhere that there is someone in DLOC who could help.
I guess the problem will be if as in the case of my Daimler Mulliner 15 the previous owner has sold the number, that will not be possible, so the only option will be to buy a more appropriate age related number, but be careful that it is at least as old as the car. Syd

Hi Marcus,
a simple and straightforward way to do this if youre not trying to get the vehicle's original number back is to simply pretend your current "A"plate is a cherished (private) plate.
You can apply online to take this number off the vehicle using this page:
https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle ... number-off
Part way through it will ask you if you wish an age-related plate to be issued to the vehicle in place of the registration you are taking off, to which you say "yes", and in your case they will automatically issue a 3-number 3 letter registration to the vehicle. The "A" plate goes on a retention certificate in case you want to put it back(!) The 3-number 3-letter registration is NOT transfereable to another vehicle, and you will duly receive a new V5c with the new reg. There is also a little doc you print out that allows you to get the new number plate made up without the V5.
Was very straightforward to do with my Gilbern.
Hope that helps,
John

Now that's a neat trick John, I shall remember that one! I think also if you don't renew the retention certificate the number becomes defunct after a while.

Surely if you can prove year of manufacture the DVLA should issue an age related plate as a plate which makes a car appear newer than it is isn’t something they generally allow.
I’m sure if you ask Graham Emmett and John Ridley they should be able to verify the age based on chassis and engine number. An old photo or log book would certainly help.

Re: securing an age related plate for my A prefix DB 18
Hi all, thanks for your collective feedback. The car is a db18 made in 1949, chassis number 652614, reg NSG 437A. It is classed as a historic for tax reasons. I have no knowledge of the original number plate and I don't believe the club does either. I made a mistake in my initial post as the plate is A suffix.
I'm happy to be surprised by a reader advising details of the original plate but I suspect that is lost in time.

Here is the offender after much work!
Re: securing an age related plate for my A prefix DB 18
Another thought, depending when the original registration was replace by the A suffix, the DVLA may themselves have a record of the previous registration. Once they get back to working normally you could enquire if they have any details of previous registration numbers. Tip: don't ask for details of previous keepers, the won't give you that, make sure you just ask about any previous registration numbers.
