hi,
I'm still having issues with the mechanical pump on the 1939 DB18-1 and am considering going to an electric pump, any advice, suggestions of what type and where from etc would be appreciated. Thanks. Robert

I don't know what your problems with the mechanical pump are. However once refurbished with a gasket and diaphram set e.g. from David Beales, I think they are very reliable and always provide enough fuel. The job to overhaul the pump is not overly complicated.
As far as I am concerned I would always prefer the original mechanical pump that can be primed by hand over an electric one where that can fail (e.g. contacts, fuse, points etc.)

I concur, I rebuilt my DB18/2 pump from an EBAY purchased kit and also gave it a good clean out at the same time. It solved the problem and runs beautifully. Just make sure the valves are put in the correct way around.

thanks for those comments.
I posted around december that I couldnt work out how my pump was supposed to work, there was no "feeling" of connection between the priming lever and the valve, the side spring was broken and the only way i could get the priming lever to actuate the piston was to unscrew the limiting screw underneath the lever, which obviously cant be how it should run. No-one seemed to offer a solution then, so I left it to get on with other jobs! but the time has come around again.....

I believe it will be worth contacting Burlen regarding this issue and they may well be able to assist; of course presuming this is a SU mechanical fuel pump you have.
