You are right , I did misread it . Drawing it out on paper i can see that by bending the quadrant arm near the shaft it will effectively reduce the radius of rotation of the point at which the ball joint attaches to the lever. Then by applying the same amount of rod travel as before it will then rotate the quadrant through more degrees and thus extend the circular range .
I can't wait to try this .

Gary
You mentioned that you replaced the bushes on the crank arms. Do you know their dimensions, and where did you source them?

Thanks

The bushes and ball joints came from Ebay. Bushes are 1" long x 7/16 bore , 9/16 diameter . They are 1/4" shorter than they should be but 1/8" at each end doesn't make that much difference.

i couldn't find imperial ball joints so bought these M6 ones and cut an M6 thread onto these rods

Thinking about recycling of valuable materials I’d like to share a general hint.
Defective personal computer printers are a gold mine when it comes to shafts made out of stainless steel.
Before you dump it take it apart and you will be rewarded with at least 3 to 5 gorgeous shafts of different diameters and length.
For my part I sometimes even buy one for a song. The older the better. Especially those dot matrix printers designed for tractor-feed paper ... (more shafts :D )

Update : i was able to straighten the selector arm with the help of a wooden block and a steel bar . By bending the arm away from the gearbox a further 5mm i am now able to select the whole range of gears from R through to Top .
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

This has been a really helpful topic. It's a job I need to do when the more urgent jobs are complete.

I have new knuckle joints to fit, but worn bushes and bent levers are not problems I had paid much attention to.
