DJ 255 NDHC exhaust

Post by KenJM »

My first foray into the new forum, having not visited the old one(s) for a long time.

Does anyone out there have a DJ254/255 fitted with, information, or better still pictures (underside/exhaust) of a car fitted with a dual exhaust? I have the diagram from the workshop manual, but it's not obvious how the dual front pipes fit through or around (under?) the chassis. Running one pipe under the chassis for the distance necessary does not seem a good idea; it could spell disaster on the first speed bump.

The car has been to a Powerflow (exhaust specialist) exhaust fabricator, but they were not prepared to try it based on the diagram, as they could not work out the route for the pipes in front of the silencer.

Like most of these cars mine, is currently fitted with a saloon single exhaust, but I would like to try to get the dual system fitted if possible.

Hello Ken

My kit of parts is of no help BUT I do know a Roadster owner who has got to rolling chassis stage and he has a dual system based around an XK120 silencer which looks rather good. The sound is rather sportier than the saloon which is probably as it should be (The Motor I think noted the exhaust note and found it rather irritating....). I should have some photos which show how his system is routed - I will look tonight.

He also know someone who has just bought a Roadster which is original enough to possibly still be wearing a factory exhaust. I don't know if he gets on here but I will let him know about your query.

Regards, Richard

I have checked through my photos of my friends' car and unfortunately it seems that I didn't get to see it after the exhaust went before the body was remounted. I have, however, emailed the owner to see if he can describe the routing for us. I will post again when I know more. I could do with information myself as I might well build up my Roadster with a dual system incorporating an Austin Healey 100/6 silencer.

On the saloon, the exhaust downpipe goes in to a "flexi" section which is threaded through a hole in the chassis, prior to attaching the front silencer. (otherwise it's too close to the ground)

Unsure whether the same applies to the roadster.

Dennis (Salmons) might know more.

This is the first time I've looked at this forum for a very long time, something else prompted me to do so. I've found that there are responses to a post I made, dating way back that I had not seen. My apologies to those that contributed, for the sake of completeness I now outline what happened; long ago with my NDHC exhaust.

I eventually got a stainless system fitted by the Hastings Exhaust Centre, in June 2016, who did a good job at a more reasonable price than was available locally in the London area; assuming I had found someone that could do so, which I didn't. Evidently my NDHC (chassis number 90553) was built on a Roadster chassis, how different this is to a NDHC chassis I don't know, but suffice to say there was no way of getting a double exhaust through the front area of the chassis on my car. Therefore the exhaust now has a single pipe from the front, through the front box to the rear box, from where it has a double tailpipe. It does the job and looks the part, I suspect is rather noisier than a NDHC original double exhaust; but how can I/we be sure? It could be made quieter by increasing the size of the rear box. But why would I ? I think the only change I would make if I started over with this would be to increase the size of the pipes to give it a deeper note, but then of course this would be even less original!

I also have a DJ260 that has an exhaust reproduced as per original in stainless, which is virtually silent.

Many NDHC's seem to have saloon exhausts, as my car had when I got it, but this makes the car sound like a saloon, it's the expedient (cheapest) solution, but not right for the car.

Again my thanks and apologies to those that responded way back!

Hi Ken,
Why don’t you order an Exhaust System from QuickSilver ?
They do the Roadster exhaust as well as as the NDHC one.
I have all my Daimler’s fitted with Quicksilver Exhaust systems.
Because they fit perfectly.
