Daimler DS420 1977

Post by Vengaburns »

Hi everyone, this is the first time I've posted in the DLOC Forum despite having owned three examples since becoming a member. I have two non runners, and it is the DS420 that I'd like assistance with to get her running. Ideally I'm looking for a mechanic with experience with this engine in the London area, who is able to see the car where it is stored in Kennington to trouble shoot the engine bay. Everything appears to be there and original. The car was built for the 1977 Earls Court show, and was used in several brochures during the 70s and 80s.
Also, purely aesthetic, but anyone who knows what TV and glasses, etc, that would have been in the Cocktail cabinet, I'd be interested to hear from you.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

I don't think that there was a "standard" for glasswork nor TV set. The numbers were so low that they probably just bought from some nearby store when an order had to be prepared. I have seen several DS420 cabinets with glasswork, and there were all slightly different.
The glasswork in the cabinet I have has the following label: "Tudor Crystal","hand crafted","full lead","fine English Crystal". If you look on http://www.tudorcrystal.com/ or on http://www.replacements.com/webquote/TUDELE.htm I would say that the best resemblance for the cut design is what these websites show as the "Eleonore" motif. I bet that regularly scanning eBay for "Tudor crystal" will eventually turn a good set up.

Does any of the listers recognise this TV-set: http://www.myDS420.info/brochures/red.d/red.23.l.html This is a picture from one of the brochures that showed the interior of that particular car.

Sorry that I can't help with a mechanic for the engine bay, since I live too far away. But if I can be of any help in locating parts etc. feel free to contact me. There is a lot of information on my DS420 website. E.g. I have this information on your car: http://www.myDS420.info/pressphotos.html#photo.282027. When it was offered for sale on eBay a while ago I noticed that the seller had taken the press photograph from my website.

Hope you succeed in restoring that wonderful car to its former glory, and I am looking forward to visiting you when it's getting along (maybe next year when the DLOC International Rally will be close to London?)

regards,
Hendrik-Jan Thomassen

Any local mechanic with experience of Jaguars with the XK engine will be able to get you going i.e. he must be familiar with pre-1986 Jaguars. Parts readily available from SNG Barratt, David Manners, or in relation to electrical items, the Distributor Doctor

Also Hendrik-Jan,
I have some more photos of the DS420 if you'd like some for your website. Ironically, I'd probably not have bought her if I'd researched DS420s with your info!
Thanks, Chris

Chris,

I would appreciate more photos!
If you contact me at hjt@ATComputing.nl with your "real" e-mail address
I can send you a high resolution scan of the press photograph.

Hendrik-Jan
