took the head off

Post by 1949startinghandle »

getting fed up with constant fiddling, I have removed the head on my LJ 200. It will be sent away for skimming, new seats, etc. The bores have a slight wear lip, but not much play. Fuel consumption is 22MPG and blowby not very bad at all so I will leave the pistons alone. Incidentally, can the sump be removed with the engine in situ? It looks like a massive chassis member is in the way.

has anyone got any advice on head re-fitting? I am using the NON-Copper gasket, should I use gasket compound, which one? Cylinders look quite good.

Normally modern composite gaskets are fitted without any sealing compound.

Yes, the instructions on my gasket says to apply a compound just around the water passages. Also included was a list of torque settings , far better than guesswork. The head is away for a complete rebuild at Cylinder Head Services.

that's the one! I have a tube of that, seems very good. Have you used it on a head gasket?

I used Wellseal on the fluid flywheel.

Hi, I seem to remember, that it was referred to as "Squires" compound when I was in the aerospace industry many years ago. Hylomar was another product, that was also used extensively.

If I remember correctly Hylomar was originally licences by Rolls Royce. British Leyland BMC etc used to use Hylomar. As I worked for a Leyland tractor dealer we also used it. What brilliant stuff. We used to "stick" a cast aluminium sump to the bottom of the block while we put the bolts in!
