Fluid Flywheel restoration

Post by ranald »

IMG_1815.JPG
As part of engine rebuild, I've removed the flywheel. Referring to the attached diagram from the parts book, i'm replacing the felt oil seal (No. 20) with a modern lip seal. Is there anything else I should replace? What does the 'Runner Shaft Cork Ring' do (No. 14)?
Thanks.

I would suggest an email to Derek Sleigh. Of all the three who specialise in the older models it is Derek who will be the most likely to respond. He might even have the part!

Hi Ranald,

The Runner shaft cork ring is just an inner seal between the runner and outer casing. It doesn't matter too much if it leaks a little bit since it is internal and won't really affect the performance. However, it does have a habit of wearing down to the point that it's the brass housing rubbing rather than the seal itself - photo attached of one that's almost worn out.... I made a press to make the internal seal (part 253633) out of viton rather than cork. Would you like me to stamp one out for you?
The external seal is just a straightforward swap for a modern lip seal as the dimensions are easy to find a match for.

Hi Alan, Yes, I'd be grateful to have a replacement Viton seal. Let me know your costs. Did you renew the 2 ball races? Thanks, Ranald

Hi Ranald,

I'll pop one in the post later this week.

I didn't change the bearings as they were as good as new. However, I have just bought a spare "just in case" flywheel which has rather rumbly bearings, so if you find a source for matching bearings, it'd be nice to know for future reference!

Alan
