Simms Lubrication Device

Post by ranald »

My 1933 Lanchester has a Simms upper cylinder lubrication device mounted on the bulkhead. It connects to the inlet manifold which draws a regulated supply of lubricant. I don't think it was a standard Lanchester / Daimler component but I suspect it is 1930s in design.

I'm hoping to put it into use but it seems to be missing parts, namely whatever allows the oil to move from the upper glass bowl (header tank) to the lower reservoir (from where it is sucked out towards the inlet manifold).

Does anyone know about these? Ideally, it would be good if I could speak to someone who has one working.

Googling 'Simms' I come up with Frederic Simms who is described as 'a British mechanical engineer, businessman, prolific inventor and motor industry pioneer'. In 1893 he formed The Daimler Motor Syndicate Limited to fit petrol engines into boats. I wonder if the Simms name on my device relates to the same man.
