Just for the record, the vacuum advance operates when the engine speed is high and the throttle is only slightly open, as is the case when the car is cruising along a level road. In these circumstances the depression in the inlet manifold is very high, thus advancing the ignition through the vacuum control. The reason for the vacuum advance is that the mixture is weak when cruising at speed with a small throttle opening and consequently slow burning; the ignition is advanced accordingly thus improving fuel consumption. Piston type aero engines employ the same principle in a slightly more sophisticated manner. In short, the vacuum advance improves fuel economy so on that basis you can probably live without it for a while.

Hi all

Well that was an easy fix, Distributor Doctor ltd did a 48 hr exchange and also supplied the correct condenser and rotor arm. She is purring beautiful now. Absolutely fab. All in, with postage , £79 . That’s great.
