Hi Chaps, below are some pictures of the Spring Shackle Pins & Bushes that I had manufactured when I restored my Lanchester way back in 1987/ 1990 .
I have been aware for many years, that the N/S/F of my car has always appeared to be slightly lower than the N/S/F ,and having recently been the recipient of some spares including a couple of Road Springs, decided that it would be a good idea to rectify things.
So the initial task was of course to clean up the replacement Springs, and remove the original threaded Bushes, it was then a simple case of pressing in the new style Bushes.
The “New” Pins were case hardened to the original specifications Vickers No 2 I believe ? Using this design of Pins & Bushes , make them very easy to fit , and are of course much cheaper to manufacture.
Top picture showing original Pin and Bushes, the Flange on each Bush prevents any lateral movement of the Spring in the Shackle .
Anyway, take a look at the pictures , your comments would be most welcome.
Cheers A’l
NB, The hole for the Split Pin is drilled after tightening the Castellated Nut.

Re: Lanchester Spring Shackle Pins and Bushes
The complexity relative to most shackle pins of the original pins have intrigued me since I bought my 15 in 2016. I found half a dozen unused but old pins in an ancient cardboard box in the boot.
I guess over the years many cars have had the originals replaced with remade pins of one sort or another, but are there advantages of the original arrangement that might be lost with the new design you had made Al.

Hi Syd, well, haven’t found any disadvantages to date, this style of Pin and Bush have been fitted to my car since it’s restoration back in 1990 , only reason I’m taking it appart, is, I have been given another good Road Spring , to replace the one that has sagged, no wear found in either of my Re- designed Pins & Bushes I fitted all of those years ago .
The only advantages, in the old design, was the fact that the Threaded version gave a longer area to distsrute the load, and up to recently no re- manufactured ones had been available !

Lanchester Road Spring Replacement
Hi Chaps, well replacement Road Spring now fitted and looking good , I also took the opportunity to remove all the Brake Drums, and de- dust the Brakes, also just had Four new 4-75 / 500 x 18 Excelsiors fitted today along with new Tubes, & Rim Tapes fitted, so I guess that’s probably enough for one day !
Cheers Al

The only reasons I can think of for the thread are greater surface area and possibly to reduce bounce.
How much effect either would have is debatable.
Good to hear you have your jobs done.

Hi. Marcel, well you don’t get much bounce anyway , fair bit of Roll on corners etc really can’t see that the threads Bushes would make any difference.
Of course, the Threaded Bushes would prevent lateral movement , thats exactly why I designed the replacement Bushes with Flanges for the same reason.

Re: Lanchester Spring Shackle Pins and Bushes
Thanks for the response Al sorry I am late replying, family health matters interrupted play.
Reason I asked is that this summer I intend to sort the spring hangers and auto lubrication system.
I am short two new pins, I made all 16 on my lathe for the Austin I did many years ago and your design is doable. Was thinking of using the two on the rear of the rear springs to minimise the affect on the steering. Syd

Re: Lanchester Spring Shackle Pins and Bushes
Hi Sid, using the Pins/ Bushes of my design makes absolutely no difference to the Steering whatsoever.
Bearing in mind that I have done over 20,000 miles, with them, I think I would have known by now.
Having just removed one of the original front Springs , that was fitted with these Pins & Bushes, I can confirm that they were showing no signs of wear at all .
Cheers A’l
