Lanchester 14, 1939, 6 Cyl Transmission oil

Post by Chase Engines »

Hi
Can anybody please off any advice regarding the type and grade of oil used in the auto transmission and in what orientation the two plugs must be when filling? Is there an owners manual available? I am asking on behalf of a customer whom we built an engine for. We have no details unfortunately and can take an educated guess but prefer relying on someone experienced with this engine. Thanks

I'm not a Lanchester 14 specialist but the 'auto' gearbox you mention should be a pre selector gearbox. The two plugs which you refer to are probably on the fluid flywheel not the gearbox and can be topped up through either plug which must be at the uppermost position. Both gearbox and fluid flywheel would require a straight 30 grade oil. I will leave it to the Lanchester specialists to furnish you with the precise information as I'm not that familiar with the model.

Hi, just phoned Chase Engines Ltd, and informed them re what Oils to use, how and where the Filler Plugs are located, type and quantity of oils etc.
They are going to get in touch with the owner , and hopefully he will be in contact with me .
