LD10Timing

I'm having some trouble with timing the engine.
Can anyone advise the correct position for the oil pump drive?
Cannot move the distributor to have the points opening at TDC as it hit's the dipstick.
Could it be the oil pump is in the wrong position.
Have had the distributor rebuilt so should be no problem there.

Keith, the contact points break at 11° before TDC, along with an 'IGN' mark being visible on the flywheel, visible through the gearbox inspection cover. this will give you a good starting point

Hi, I’m not an expert on LD10’s
, but I would suggest that you, remove the Distributor, turn the engine over until NO 1 Piston is at TDC, with the Valves on No 4 Cylinder “Rocking” .
Next, lift the Oil Pump Drive Shaft and turn it to a position that allows the Distributor to re- engage with the Drive Shaft,then refit the Drive Shaft into the Oil Pump, then rotate the Distributor until the Rotor Arm until is pointing toward the segment in the Distributor Cap on No 1 Cyl ,with the Points just about to open.

Keith if you move the plug leads around one post on the cap will this help your problem, this should allow you to turn the distributor more as number one will be away from the dipstick.

Keith, if the distributor has been rebuilt, it sounds like the skew gear has been fitted 180 degrees out, assuming it's been removed for bushing replacement. (Before anyone jumps on this and says the drive is offset, that only applies to the 'D' drive, not the skew gear to the distributor shaft.) Anyway, if the skew gear has been removed from the distributor shaft and refitted 180 degrees out then it's an easy fix. Install the distributor in the correct position and then swap the 1 and 4 leads over and then do the same to the 2 and 3. There are other ways, but that's far and away the simplest.

Success.
The engine was apparently 180 degrees out.
Timed it on number 4 cylinder and hey presto.
Thanks chaps for your assistance.
Now only have to get the carb rebuilt as it seems too worn for it to run as it should.
