Lanchester 11 water pipe

Post by Marcel Renshaw »

I know this was on the old forum but now there is some progress with tooling I thought I would start a fresh forum entry.
The big question is how many people would like to buy one?
For me to give the final go ahead to the pattern maker I need to be sure that firstly the tooling cost will be covered by sales. Secondly I don't want to over price them and end up making too much from them.
Ideally a project like this needs 10 sales minimum to make the component as cheap as possible.

The first castings have been made. Based on the small response the first ones will cost £80 each plus postage. I will not lower the price on future runs but it will increase.
If anyone would like to see one I will have one at the AGM this Saturday.

Have to agree A'L they look first class and people spend more on a night out then Marcel has charged for a first class piece of work, if they were asked to make a item for this they would walk away.
Just why these small batch items never get the support they deserve is a mystery , well done Marcel keep up the good work a true Classic car owner and parts supplier.

Hi Tony, great idea, but unfortunately the club stopped keeping parts many years ago owing to the cost of running the operation. And there we have the nub of the problem I'm afraid , owners do not seem to want to part with their "Hard Earned" cash on '" Just in case" parts ,
This means people like myself and of course Marcel are reluctant to go to the trouble and indeed a great deal of expense, to get parts made if only to have them on the shelf for many years, and this is precisely why I have been actively encouraging Lanchester 11 owners to buy one of these castings ,as I know from experience that one day they will certainly need one.
So once again, could I implore ALL Lanchester Eleven owners, to order yours now please .

Best wishes, A'l

Alas, I do not own a Lanchester 11, but if I did and knowing the fragility of this type of casting (I broke the one on my 104, but they of course are available from Daimler specialists "off the shelf") I would certainly keep one in stock. You only have to tighten the nuts just a fraction too much and,........whoops! Scrap casting!!!

Eighty quid? Cheap if the alternative is not being able to drive your car and it is in effect a "parts only" car without it.

People moan about prices, but if you have a car worth 1000s of pounds, what's £80??

I strongly support those who are using their own money to help us keep our cars on the road.

Now, consider this. What price parts? DaveP and myself bought, from the estate of the late Ron Allen, all the E18/E20 parts he had, which were numerous and filled a small van. With our own money. Most of the parts are "unobtanium". Yet one owner moaned at the price of £25 for a (brand new old stock) track rod end.

He has a car worth about £10,000 on which the steering won't work..................I don't consider this "rip off" price. He indicated that Rimmers could sell him a TRE for his Triumph for £13.50. Me, being forever the diplomat, told him to get his E20 TRE from Rimmers then.........................

I recently bought a new servo for the 104 from Powertrack. Brand new, not reconditioned. £120. Cheap, in my opinion, as I couldn't drive the car without it. Less than the cost of a service on my daily driver!!!!!

I do think we need to stand back and look at what prices people are offering these new parts and think "Hmmm.....if I don't get it, what do I do as my car will be useless without it".

Rant over.

Thank's for that Neil, lets hope that some of those owners will now decide to purchase one of those castings. Incidentally, I had at my own expense actively pursued various people who initially said they could get these casting reproduced, often covering many miles driving to personally explain what was required, then to be told that it was just too hard or expensive get them made, only Marcel was actually " brave" enough to take up the challenge.
To Marcell, I would just like to add , "Many Thanks" for your time and unstinting effort to get these parts made, not just for we Lanchester Eleven owners , but from everybody else who has benefited from your skill and professionalism in the past.

Best wishes A'l

Hi All, I'm just in the process of ordering a water pipe from marcel, but he mentions that there are 2 sizes of adapter which the bulb sensor fits into, I can't get to the car at the moment and as a later model -1939 I wonder if I've got the 5/8 type, will try to get to my car to find out. all the best tony
