Hello,

Do I have any chance to find the washer for rear end axle cover (Referenced #27 into the "Lanchester Ten Spare Parts Catalogue") or should I make it by myself ? In this last case, what is the correct thickness of the washer that I have to use please ?

Kind regards,

Julian

PS : as I'm sure that Al' will read this post, any news from the other French guy... ?

Good morning All,

I'm currently working on a "Special" Lanchester (maybe not a LA10 indeed !!) which presents an oil leak at the left rear axle (see red arrow on the picture). At this step, I block !

Should I remove the brake back plate ? If yes, how ? And the next steps... ?

I found an amazing rubber gasket behind the hub centre (see pictures 2 and 3). Any chance to purchase a new one ?

Thank you for your help.

Julian

I have to add that the rear brake system fitted on this Lanchester is different than the one described in the "Lanchester Ten Spare Parts Catalogue" that I own.

The rear brake fitting in the catalogue :

The rear brake fitting on the car :

An explanation... ? Thanks

Hello Julian,

this rear brake looks like the one of my 1933 Daimler 15. So you should have a look into the Spare Parts Catalogue T.C.73 to clear the needed parts.

Rolf

Hi this may help, although written with reference to the Lanchester LA11, the same principles apply;

Lanchester Eleven

Procedure for replacing rear hub oil seal

Having already identified which side is leaking,
Drain oil from axle and apply hand brake.
Remove split pin, hub nut & flat washer, release hand brake de-adjust
the brake shoe assy and remove the Two countersank Screws, and then
remove the Brake drum.
NOTE Before using hub puller always refit hub nut on by 4 /5 turns for safety.
Remove hub assy using a suitable puller, this will expose the hub oil seal retainer.
The retainer is screwed onto the axle assy (R/H thread) and is locked in position
by a special extended nosed set screw (See picture)
Prior to removing the screw and oil seal retainer, mark position of screw
and retainer with white paint this will assist when refitting later

Next remove the old oil seal taking care not to damage surfaces in oil seal retainer.
Press home new oil seal, ensuring that it is fitted the correct way round!
Lubricate new oil seal prior to fitting the assy back onto vehicle..
Refit assy and tighten until white marks line up and refit locking screw.
Prior to refitting hub, ensure that there is no damage to sealing area.
Also pump some grease through grease nipple in hub to ensure that
the passageway to the hub bearing is not blocked
Refit hub assy back onto half shaft, refit flat washer, hub nut and retighten.
Fit new split pin, brake drum and re-adjust brake assy
Finally refill rear axle with correct grade of oil. (SAE 140)

Rear Hub seal Part No OSL17525037R23.
Or OSL/15025037R21 ?

Good afternoon JT7196,

I did it this morning ! I used the procedure described in your post but the sentence that advices to mark the position of the screw and the oil retainer !! 😬😬😬

A "modern" oil seal has been fitted into the oil retainer. The model is a SOG 104579 - 41.28/63.5/12.7

Thanks for all !

Julian
