Re: Oil type for steering box
If you look at something like Miller oils or Penrite they have on the shelf stuff you can use.
The problem with Penrite is you appear to pay a premium to ship it around the world from Australia.

Colin,

Unless your box is extremely oil tight, I'd suggest using the fluid grease you can buy for Land Rovers. This is probably at the upper end of the market :

but now that I look, this isn't much cheaper
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/One-Shot-Swi ... xyshFRc59n
I've used the latter type on both my 1933 10 and a 1947 P2 Rover, no ill effect on the steering weight and no continual loss.
Colin has given you a good lead to the original types but don't be surprised if it finds its way out although you could be the lucky one !

Re: Oil type for steering box
Hi,
Yes we here in Oz use a Pennrite product which is basically a liquid grease: steering box lube.
It has been really good in my cars but it does take a lot of patience to fill a steering box as the lube really is very thick and pours very, very slowly. I have tried heating it in a hot water bath or even the microwave but I am a bit nervous of it exploding if I go overboard with the heat!
Any suggestions on how to get it more pourable for the fill gratefully accepted.

Peter, a normal canister grease gun will usually pump the runny stuff. The problem with the SP is the location of the filler plug and getting a tube long enough to reach it while having the grease gun in a position to easily pump it.

Re: Oil type for steering box
Hi Colin,
I have had some success using a soft plastic squeeze sauce dispensing bottle. I patiently fill the wide neck using a spatula and then screw the top on and gently squeeze away. The angle of the filler in the SB is easily reached by the bottle outlet. It is still relatively hard work and very slow, best done on a hot day in the sun so things warm up for better flow.
A job for summer.
Cheers
