LA10 rear axel oil

Post by Jamesgeary »

I ordered some SAE 140 gear oil for my 1934 LA10 rear axel but I stupidly did not notice when I ordered it that it has "mild EP' additive. Will this matter or should I get the NON EP oil?

Additives eat into the bronze so it will damage your rear axle will not be a cheap repair , so best buy oil without additives to save your car and pocket.

Thanks for the reply. It is a Fuchs oil and reading up it says it will not damage yellow metals. I’ll probably still send it back, just in case.

Hello James,

The following link (non-hypoid gear oils - GL1) may well help and you can certainly check each spec for your particular application.

Perhaps the Penrite Transoil 140 may be the way forward, reading your previous info - purely a suggestion.

I have a 1936 LA 14 and reading the old servicing manual , the oil prescribed for the axle was just called 'Daimler heavy gear oil', I therefore assumed,
(wrongly it seems) , that a standard 80/90 gear oil would do the job. Is there a definitive oil that should be used for the axle and also gearbox?
I'd welcome your input.

Thanks, Frank.

Hi Frank, you need SAE140 Gear Oil, for your rear Axle . The SAE bit is very important, never put n”EP” grade Oil in your Axle.
