Well I certainly got that very wrong how far from a Bugatti Royale is that :D

On the other hand full marks to Dave Philpot, spot on with both the other cars. :D

Great photos, and an interesting thread, I love this sort of challenge and there must be millions of similar photos out there.

Now I wonder what that rag top is? I have an idea, anyone willing to have a guess, don't be shy there is no sin in being wrong as I have proved, we are all friends here. Syd

Hello Syd,

You went for absolute quality with the Bugatti and that's worth a call in anyone's book !!

Good points, well made re the identification.

As you say, how many of these superb photos are lurking. Highly likely in lofts and the like - probably bundled up with other paperwork and stored as part of a family house clearance.

The owner of the photos can only add one positive and that is he knows his father did own a Lanchester. Whether that was ever photographed is unknown, hence these submissions.

All the best.

Hello,

In connection with the last submission of photos:

The following informative update has been supplied by Chris Clark - of whom, many will know as the pre-1931 Lanchester Model Historian & Registrar; that said he is also extremely knowledgeable on post-1931 models as well !!

Of interest, Chris has just released Volume 4 of the "The Lanchester Legacy", which now completes the series of works. https://lanchesters.com/

I am most grateful to Chris, for his informative update.

Best wishes.

Richard.

The photo of the car on the open road, with the sun-roof open and with the driver by his door, is intriguing. It's not a Lanchester or a Daimler car but the coachwork uses the bonnet catch lever/handles that are a feature of the Daimler-Lanchester companies. The bonnet mechanism was a patented invention and I can't recall seeing this mechanism previously on any other car make. The early 15-18 began life in 1931 using two bonnet levers (see the new Lanchester Legacy Volume 4) but later changed to the usually-seen single bonnet catch.

The middle pic in the set of three is quite a find! It shows a 6-cylinder, 6.178cc, overhead-camshaft, dual-ignition, circa-1923 Lanchester Forty. It is fitted with 7-seat, open-drive, landaulet coachwork by the Lanchester Motor Company. The car has later been fitted with aluminium-disc covers over the spoked wheels to look like the later 40s, as well as the headlamps being raised to make them the same height as the later 40s. A similar car to this shown is in Lanchester Legacy Volume 4.

If it's any use I've taken it out separately

Only obscure car I could find was Marendaz cars https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marendaz searching online for various types, some get quite similar (more than the wiki stock photo), but none exactly the same
