I agree in terms of cost, this print cost me £3.50 to print so its a no brainer just to have something in place for the moment.Marcel Renshaw wrote: ↑Fri Apr 23, 2021 3:02 pm The cost factor of 3D printing depends on numbers of components required.
On very small numbers 3D printing has some advantages over pattern making.
Printing is getting cheaper as the technology improves the number of materials available is also increasing.
The limiting factor currently is number of foundries with printing facilities.
I believe the heads had the sand printed to create the cores and the external features to facilitate casting.
A new sand print needed for each head.

3D Printed Air Silencer Pipe

Re: 3D Printed Air Silencer Pipe
But if one doesn't have a 3D printer or software, what's the cost of initial outlay on those ?
Re: 3D Printed Air Silencer Pipe
Well for a printer it depends on what the size of the items you want to print and/or what material you want to use. If you just want to print something with a 200mm^3 and just basic materials I think around £200 would get you a decent hobby printer. Material comes in reels like welding wire and depending on material it could be from £20 and up for 1kg of material. For 1 kg I could print roughly 8 of those air intake prototypes.
Re: 3D Printed Air Silencer Pipe
That's a heck of a lot less than I imagined
What sort of software would also be required ?

Re: 3D Printed Air Silencer Pipe
Software for prepping the files for printing is free unless you want really fancy tools, which you would only use if you were doing it professionally. Here are a couple of examples; https://craftbot.com/software , https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura
So for modelling software to create the models, the only real one I could recommend that is free and decently covered with tutorials is Autodesk Fusion 360 https://www.autodesk.co.uk/products/fusion-360/personal

I didn't know it was so low cost and easy for initially getting off the ground. Food for thought.
