Dumfries Guid Nychburris 2017 - LA10 and LD10

Post by Simon Hyslop »

On Saturday 17th June Dumfries held its annual pageant which commemorates significant times in the town's history. It's been a Royal Burgh for 831 years now and our local vintage car club thought we should turn out to support the evening parade.

I had my LA10 out and my friend John Ronnie was a couple of cars behind in his LD10. My car did just about ok but the slow pace resulted in some sooted up plugs and a temperature gauge at "boil". However, with no fan or water pump it was no shame to the car . The good weather resulted in a turnout of thousands and it was all good fun.
If the title has you confused, it means "good neighbours", as Dumfries was reputed in the past to be a place of good neighbourliness - unless you were on the wrong side of Robert the Bruce!

Very nice! Is that an A40 or A50 Cambridge behind?

I believe NFM 465 is Ron Allen's old car.
What have you done?? It was a lovely bright two-tone blue :-)
Originally the standard Lanchester "drab grey" he rolled it after he got a road cone trapped between the tyre and the wheel arch. He bought it back off the insurance company and his nephew - who was a paint sprayer by trade, resprayed it. He subsequently went one to respray his SP250 pea green, his Special Sports two-tone brown (NTT 400 - it's portrait hangs over my desk) and his two 1905 Renaults bright yellow and bright blue. What a character!

Would that be the pea green SP250 I often see in my neck of the woods?

I can't think anybody else would paint an SP quite like that. Now owned by Richard Law

I spoke to the owner last year outside my local country pub and he said it was painted that colour as no one would want to steal it.

No they wouldn't!
But actually Ron Allen had it painted this colour so other road users could see it - after he'd had a collision!

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd pick up where this one left off, except we missed a year but yesterday we had three BSA products making the parade. Mr. Galligan's BSA Scout stepped in at short notice to take some of the event principals here and there in the morning and both my LD10 (KWW) and Mr. Ronnie's (NFM) made the parade, as did the BSA. The 2 mph crawl round Dumfries is relatively straightforward with a fluid flywheel although iin my case, a set of new valve guides might not go amiss eventually!
