1960 Majestic sold
An interesting car came up at the H&H sale this week - possibly the last 3.8 litre Majestic, reputed to be the 1959 Motor Show car, sold for £5,400. It looked good value as it was quite tidy judging by the photographs

I think this is the one that Ray Jensen had worked on. It might have been the one he brought to an International Rally at Warwick some years ago.

Diplomatic plates, I guess that means it will have an age related number, no air cleaner and not the best colour but looks to have been good value at the sale price.

Syd, if I may correct you. The D signifies a Dublin plate. 60 year of manufacture and 30 the one that relates to the vehicle itself.

Re: 1960 Majestic sold
Is this a joke by Dexter ? Those are diplomatic plates, and the car was described as EU registered . In my experience, Irish registered cars of the 1960s always had a Z in the numberplate

Re: 1960 Majestic sold
This is most emphatically NOT a joke. The Irish changed their numbering system years ago and to some extent we have copied them. The first two numbers denote the year of registration, in this case 1960. The next is the letter denoting the county in which the vehicle is registered. D for Dublin, C for Cork and G for Galway. The remaining counties used the first and last letters of the name. eg KE is Kildare, LK is Limerick but where there are two counties that share the same letters eg Kilkenny and Kerry then Kerry is KY and Kilkenny KK. The same applied to Waterford and Wexford, WD and WX. The next numbers are applicable to the vehicle itself. This Majestic was exported to Eire and given one of their "modern" numbers.
Numbers that started with a Z were Irish. Whether they have all had to be re-registered I wouldn't know.

Just as an addendum. The Republic of Ireland is in the EU and thus this car could be described as EU registered but that's rather a long stretch. Better to have described it as having an Irish plate

What have I started?
We are in danger of drifting off subject here but to add to what has been said in relation to this particular car.
I was quite wrong about the diplomatic plates, Wikipedia explains the Irish republic system and this is as ND says a Dublin registration.
Secondly I am given information from the Welsh DE guru that as the car is 1960 registered it is not the last of the line, I quote from his email :-
The car sold @ H & H is a Majestic (DF316), in production from 1958 until mid-1960, when superseded by the Majestic (DF318), which stayed in production until mid-1962.
I guess how ever there is an unlikely chance it could be the last of the DE316 series.
Just to confirm further, the sole surviving Regency 1 was also Dublin registered after export from the UK and is now registered 53D1 and was the subject of an article in the magazine, written by my informant Dave Philpot. Syd
