More than likely it's the grub screw holding it. You don't know it's there unless remove the casting from the block.
I found a filter just the right height to avoid spacing the casting from the block so as not to disturb the distributor when replacing the filter. With filters around £5 changing the oil and filter is now easy and cheap.

for choosing filter use the 'cross reference' catalogue.. the Fram PH3600 fits, is in most catalogues and tends to be the lowest price..but whilst 'adequate' it is NOT the best filter.. try and cross reference to a Crossland brand.. I use 'Wix' which may not be sold in UK.. I'll check for ID numbers when back @workshop on tues..

Wix filters are sold in the Uk. I bought one the other day from a local auto parts store for my trusty Toyota Carina.

Hello Andy,

Have a look at this link in relation to the Fram PH3600 filter that has been flagged.

Take your pick !!

Personal preference is Mann filters and if you give Sue at Flexolite call, she will be able to advise accordingly - ideally I would do this first before choosing from the range displayed within the link. The link filters shown will all fit, but dimension wise it could be a case of too long / short / wide etc; hence a the call being prudent.

Regards.

Richard.

HI

I had also looked into a spin on filter conversion but having now done 2 oil/filter changes on my 1966 DV8 saloon I am glad I saved my money. With the car up on ramps I found changing the oil filter extremely easy and straightforward. I thus fail to see the advantage of fitting a modification to accept the spin on type at least on the saloon. I accept that on the SP250 Dart accessibility may favour the spin on type.

Happy New Year to all Daimler fans

Spin on oil filters that work with the 'Flexolite' adaptor :- I peronally use Wix 51342.becuse they are known to be high quality and readily available in my location. ( heaver capacity.. larger body is 51085.. fits well..good for 8,000 miles) the 'Napa Gold' are same number as Wix, minus the '5'. i.e.:- WIX 51342 = NAPA GOLD 1342.

Cross reference for the Wix 51342 ( similar dimensions to the original canister filter ) :- Crossland 371. Champion OF09 . AC 02. Amsoil ASF 34. Baldwin B178. BL/Unipart GFE 139. Bosch 3421. Delphi FX 1020. this is by no mean an exhaustive list .. but all the above will work.

Perhaps if you had the opportunity to sample & change a spin on filter, you would understand the rationale.
