Has anybody any experience of fitting a Consort gearbox in place of the Special Sports gearbox?
Current SS gearbox has broken 1st and considering this as a solution.
I know the ratios will be different (although I think it will climb hills better) but will it just slot in? I can’t see the casing being any different in size nor fitting. The quadrant has different markings but it’s still 4 positions.
Any comments welcome.

Re: Consort gearbox in a Special Sports
G'day Graham from a very warm and humid Melbourne!
There is at least one SS here in Oz that has a Consort gb. As far as I can tell they should be pretty much a straight swap. As you say the ratios will be different but this could be resolved by replacing the worm drive diff for the Consort hypoid diff. The SS really has two useable gears 2nd and OD, the others appear to me just a means of getting into these two gears
Cheers
Michael

I have both gearboxes sitting in our garage, so can measure as required.
As Michael says, the gearing is different, so whether to change axel depends on whether it's a short-term or "for ever" swap.

Re: Consort gearbox in a Special Sports
Thanks team!
My own DB18 has a Consort back axle and the ratios are perfect for today's driving.
David, I'd be grateful for a rudimentary tape measure check although I can't imagine them being different (Just had a thought - I can look in the Parts Book and see if they hav ethe same part number)

Just checked on www.db18.org and they are the same part number so I'm confident it will go in

Re: Consort gearbox in a Special Sports
The Consort box will fit straight in. The speedo drive gear ratio is different because of the different rear axle ratio so your speedo will show the wrong speed; however, if you fit the SS speedo drive gear to your Consort box that’ll rectify that. Incidentally, the box can be removed without disturbing the engine in case you didn’t know.

Steve,
Why don't you recount your experience with a DB 18 saloon with a Special Sports Gearbox fitted?
I am sure the forum members would appreciate the story.
Cheers

Sounds like a story for the Driving Member too.
Must have been a bloody nightmare.
They are the worst ratios ever chosen for a gearbox.

Re: Consort gearbox in a Special Sports
I posted a brief article on this issue as suggested by Peter Grant. Although it wasn’t quite a nightmare to drive it was annoying to say the least. Of course the upside was that when in overdrive in conjunction with the higher ratio rear axle it simply hummed along on the straight and level!
