Daimler Majestic 3.8 Power Steering

Post by PhilS »

Hello all,

I’m helping my dad sell his beloved 1960 Daimler Majestic 3.8 6cyl and I’ve had a query about adding power steering.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
Does anyone have the parts?
Can anyone give me a rough cost to have power steering added?

Also, here’s more information on the car

Many thanks,

Phil

I have also considered this modification and decided that the easiest option would be to have an electric motor fitted - EZ Electric Steering, for example - but the cost is rather steep.

I saw the EZ stand at the NEC last November and made an enquiry as to electric PAS on the V8 saloon.

It is eye-wateringly expensive to say the least and on my car it is a time consuming tricky instalment - the latter comment stated by the owner of the company, which I thought was at least honest and upfront !!

Mentioned in case any V8 saloon owners were thinking along these lines. I only enquired due to curiosity and have stayed with the conventual set-up which works just fine.

Best wishes.

Hi Phil

I have a V8 250 with manual gearbox and no power steering, the steering is only heavy when the car is stationery or moving very slowly as in parking, but as I have driven cars since 1956 and almost none had power steering up to 1980 when I bought a Mercedes E class, I have no problem with no PS.

The knack is not to try to steer when the car is stationery, no pwer steering is half the fun and half the skill iof driving a classic car in my opinion and I am almost 80. Syd

If my memory is correct the Majestics could be fitted with power steering. I saw one in a scrap yard many years ago which did have it. You would need a dynamo fitted with a power steering pump at the back just like the MK2 Jaguars. Alternatively if you could find a way to mount the pump from a Majestic Major then I would suspect quite strongly that the car could be fitted with power steering. You would need the ram and pipes from the M.Major as well as a bracket to be welded for the fixed end of the ram. You might be able to find somewhere for the fluid reservoir to fit too, I don't see why it can't be done.
As an alternative you could offer to buy the interested party a set of weights to improve his upper arm strength....
