Fitting an electric cooling fan to a V8 saloon

Post by Paul Edginton »

At the time of restoring my car {1967 V8 man OD} the cooling fan drive had seized up so a significant amount of power was consumed at higher revs moving a lot of air.
At the cost of a new drive hub I decided to fit an electric cooling fan as it was cheaper and more efficient.
I obtained a fan which was very close to the size of the rear opening of the shroud and by cutting off the original fan mounts the new fan fitted very well with just a little packing around the circumference.
I wired it up directly to the battery using a relay and a temperature sensor in the top radiator hose.
The radiator was record and the engine rebuilt before I bought the car. Most of the time the fan is off and the car runs at about 70c and never looks like overheating even on hot summers day.
Cheers Paul

I am having a little trouble with the photos
The one of the dash is of my direct acting oil pressure gauge on start up at idle.

That's a neat modification Paul with regard to fitting an electric fan - most I have seen are either on a frame or through the matrix.

Do you have an override switch or purely the hose sensor, for the cut in/out of the fan ??

Using the shroud is an important feature as it concentrates the air flow through the rad but also eliminates surrounding hot air being pulled back through the rad via the fan - reducing the efficiency of the cooling effect.

A lot owners of classic cars, where appropriate, try to block unnecessary holes / gaps at the front of the car to reduce the unwanted addition of hot air being recirculated through the rad.

Thanks for posting.

Regards.

Richard.

Hi Richard,
It does not have a manual override but is fused. Often the fan will run after a journey due to heat soak but I have only had one problem in12 years and 50k miles when the control box for the heat sensor failed.
Thank you for your kind comments
Paul
