V8 250 auto gearbox fluid

Post by captain bobo »

When my gearbox and torque converter were rebuilt 4 or 5 years ago, Dexron 2 fluid was put in.

During a recent conversation with Chris Seabrook he commented that Dexron 2 is "too slippery". Looking at alternatives I see that Comma ATF is designed for use with gearboxes such as the BW35. There is also a recent thread about gearbox problems that mentions AQF fluid.

So which might be best - ATF or AQF? Is the difference significant? If I drain the Dexron out , remove the sump, check the filter and insure all is clean, are there any other things that I should be looking out for? Any issues likely with possible incomplete draining of the old fluid?
Best wishes, Dave B

Hello Dave,

I have used Penrite Classic ATF in my V8-250 saloon without any issues whatsoever. Firstly it is mineral based and secondly it is Type A spec which is the requirement for our type of autoboxes.

If any issues were likely to occur that will have surfaced by now.

I would say that using DX 3 may be an issue because it is too advanced for old style BW units to handle over a period of time.

Hope that assists ??

By the way, Classic Oils will deliver free of charge anything over £60.

Regards.

Hi Dave

I cannot remember whether it was on this or the Triumph Stag forum that users have same or later autobox. However on a
Triumph forum it is de riguer that one uses AQF as Dexron ATF indeed induces slip on both the BW36/65 Autobox. I use Comma AQF for both my Stag amd Daimler V8 HTH,. No problems so far.
