V8-250 Saloon: Front Seats - Manual & Automatic

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

Can anyone clarify please, IF the front seats for a V8-250 saloon were different for manual and auto transmission cars ??

From photos I have seen, I get the impression that the front corner edges (adjacent with each other) on a manual have a more pronounced curve whereas on the auto transmission cars are more square edged. If this is the case, I presume this is to allow movement for the manual gearstick ??

Any help, much appreciated.

Regards.

Hi Richard. When I bought my V8 240 manual the driver seat squab was badly worn with some rips. I bought a complete set of seats from an auto version, which matched both the colour and the patina, now I can't say for sure that there was any difference in the two sets but if there is it is difficult to detect, I have only fitted the driver side squab which matches the passenger seat fine.

As the old and replacement squabs just exchanged without any fettling I am fairly certain there is no difference in the basic shape of the seat.

The manual gear lever is a long way forward of the seats so I would say there is no difference. Syd

as stated by buckfield :- on the manual cars, the inner edges at front of cushion are cut out to accommodate the gear lever.. the radius is approx 4 1/2" at very front (aligns with 3rd pleat on seat base) and follows a steady curve with ends with the cross beading to the central pleats... the cover has the beading around this radius.. they are similar in pattern, but not quite the same as those of the Jaguar S type/420. One flaw in Nigel Thorleys "original jaguar Mk2' shows a manual/od Daimler with auto seats.. no mention of the difference in manual and auto box seats.. I'm unsure of All the daimler versions had reclining front seats.(rare on Mk2 jaguars) all those Iv'e recently observed do recline..

Thank you for the updates and has confirmed my suspicions.

I wonder how restrictive the square edge seats are with manual gear change, compared to the purpose designed curved corner seating.

This enquiry relates to the V8-250 conversion from auto transmission to manual using the Toyota W58 gearbox.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has this specific conversion in situ, please.

Many thanks.

Here is a photo of the front seats of my car. The transmission tunnel is different as is the console.
Cheers, Paul
