V8-250 Saloon: Expansion Bottle

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

I have noted from historic DM issues that some owners of the V8 saloon have opted for a coolant expansion bottle. I like that idea and can see the benefits.

From what I can gather, those who have published their modification appear to place the expansion bottle where the PAS reservoir is located. I presume that is because "their" car does not have PAS, hence the availability of space.

I have PAS and there is no chance of fitting the bottle there. As such, I will be grateful to know if any V8 saloon owners with PAS have done this modification and if so where they located the expansion bottle.

Should say, I do have a Unipart Allegro expansion bottle with 4lbs cap and a zero pressure rated cap for the rad if the conversion is viable.

Many thanks.

Hi, I did have an expansion bottle for a few years but removed it about 10 years ago and never really saw a need for it on my car, but I had a tall cylinder type 1 litre bottle which I put on the brake servo side of the engine bay clamped in place with heavy duty cable clips with the overflow pipe connected to the inlet/outlet on top of the bottle. my car is now fitted with a 9 lb cap and I have had no issue with water leaking out, as long as your cooling system is sound with re-enforced hoses and tight clamps. a pic of my car with bottle on the left side.

The V8 saloon should not need an expansion bottle, as long as the cooling system is all in good condition.
Another reason is a lot of people overfill the radiator, and it will then push the excess out of the overflow.
Let the system find it's own level, then leave it alone, do not be tempted to top it up.

If it isn't broken don't try to fix it is a great adage Cliff.

I have had my V8 250 for almost 10 years and apart from the odd drop of coolant now and again never had a problem.

I did consider doing it when the matter was discussed some time back, but frankly on reflection there are other jobs that I felt would be a better use of my time. Syd
