V8 Saloon Poly or metalastic bushes?

Post by Paul0123 »

Hello, I am about to rebush the torque arms on my car. I have seen the forum threads highlighting the fun to be had in doing this, however, I am looking for any experience regarding which type of bushes to fit 'poly' or 'metalastic' ones, any benefits disadvantages, etc. All inputs gratefully received. Thanks Paul

Hello Paul,

Whenever I need to replace bushes on my classics I always use poly replacements; if the application lends itself to it - i.e. availability.

Rubber bushes can have varying qualities although companies such as DMG do provide a consistent high standard.

With Metalistic bushes you need to be even more careful, as these really can range from decent to very poor.

If you do fit poly to the Daimler, ensure you go for the comfort grade - you certainly do not need to fit a harder poly such as red or you will lose the handling and feeling of the cars original set-up. Finally, ensure you purchase quality poly from the recognised known companies rather than a equal type.

Hope that assists ??

Many Thanks for the reply Richard, and what a useful link, just the ticket. When you have fitted the poly bushes have you found that they fit ok, i.e. tolerances are good for fitment to car structures and bolts and fittings etc?

Cheers Paul

I've never had a problem fitting poly bushes and I get mine form either Polybush or Superflex - depends what car and which company supplies.

They can be tight to get in, which is what you want. Do NOT be tempted to trim them or sand slightly to produce an easier fit. A squirt of washing up liquid is useful to encourage the poly's to pop in, but do NOT use grease etc.

G clamps and the like are useful for pushing the poly's in to situ.

I think the hardest job of all is actually getting the old rubber units out - they can be spiteful to put it mildly !!

If you have the actual component free from the car and are seriously struggling to remove the rubber units of put poly's in, worth going to the local garage and asking them to assist using their hydraulic press.

Here you have at the top a new metalastic torque rod bush and below a poly bush with 50k miles wear.
The poly bush is flogged out allowing the top of the diff to move backwards and hit the edge of the petrol tank on going over a bump in the road at speed.

I was surprised that this happened as I had expected these bushes to last longer. I did some research and found that the bush should have been lubricated with special grease when fitted by the mechanic.

The two types of bush work in very different ways. The metalistic is pressed in and relies on the compliance of the rubber to allow movement. The poly bush is in three parts the central metal spacer and the two piece bush. The bush is a hand fitted element which is able to rotate within its mounting.

Would I use poly bushes again? Yes as I think they are superior as long as they are fitted properly. I prefer to use modern techniques and materials on my car where appropriate.

I am not a trained engineer so I hope the above is right

Cheers,
Paul

Fitting Guide from Polybush, they make them so I guess they know what they are talking about:

"You need grease to fit a Polybush”
Many think grease is required to fit our bushes, this is not recommended. The bushes are designed using an interference fit and created to spec. By using grease in the application the bush will rotate within its housing and in effect will turn the bush into a bearing. Grease can also cause the bushes to squeak when fitted and the grease itself will remain present between the bush outer surface and the metal of the arm, this can allow the grease to act as cutting agent over time as it does not wear away. By using tyre soap or washing up liquid fitting of the bushes will be easy and will dry up very quickly removing movement within the housing.
If you are new to polyurethane bushings and are unsure of what hardness to choose, then our website will guide you in the right direction and often recommend immediately the relevant bush required for your application. However, if you are looking for something more bespoke then call our friendly team on 01978 664316, they will be glad to help you.

I think different suppliers have different ideas or maybe different ideas for different applications.
I have seen sets supplied with little red grease envelopes but can’t remember where the grease was for.
Colin,
I may be slow but I’m rough as well !

Colin I think you are right as using google I found a number of manufactures that supply lubricants with their product.
Richard I am not sure what is the right way to go now. What I do know is that the polyurethane bushes I fitted did not last as long as I expected.

Hello Paul,

Touch wood, I've never had an issue with poly's and I have fitted them to many different vehicles. All have been subjected to various sorts of driving conditions and manner of driving !!

Personally I only use the accepted names: Polybush, Superflex etc - the difference being, as mentioned earlier, not all companies stock all vehicle requirements. I've never fitted unbranded poly, just will not chance it.

There is no doubt that how the poly's are fitted will determine thier longevity.
