SP Front wheel bearings

Post by Warsash 2 »

Hi
We are having to replace the front offside wheel bearings. The attach picture shows a metal plate which is not shown in any of the books I have.
It appears that the bearing has been running in it but it was not fixed in any way. Has anyone any Ideas please.
Regards

Colin

It's the holder for the inner bearing felt seal. The bent flange locates against a flat on the vertical link.

Hi Nick
Thanks for this. It appears that the flange was never bent over to fix it and is well worn as it appears to have been spinning. Anyone with any idea where I can get a replacement
Regards

The inner seal comprises a felt washer and the plate you have found. The Parts Catalogue lists the seal assembly (that presumably comprises both parts) as Part No. 431566.
David Manners lists this part (but shows an irrelevant picture of an electrical switch!). It would be worth contacting DM to find out what exactly the part includes. Barry Thorne may well be able to supply the Parts too.

Hi ALL
I received the parts in good time from Barry Thorne as was suggested.
At the moment the large bearing is jammed solid in the hub. Any tricks to get it out would be much appreciated.

Hi Colin

Steel or wire wheels?

If wires I suggest new splined front hubs plus new bearings. If those on your car have done many miles new unworn splines and bearings won't go amiss.

Glad you got home safe.

Cheers

Hi Colin,
do you mean the bearing outer race? The taper roller part should just drop out. (Unless it's somehow been fitted facing the wrong way, I suppose?)
If it's the outer race, if you take out the other taper bearing and clean out some of the grease from the hub you should be able to see that there are two opposing "notches" in the face that the race butts up to. You can use a blunt drift from the front of the hub through the notches to drive out the old race.

Apologies if it's something different and I've misunderstood your problem!

Hi John
It was the inner race that does not have the notches for some reason. Colin managed to force it out with a heavy duty press at a nearby garage. The bearing was well knackered to use the technical term.
It is now back on the road with a bit of running required before Newby.
Thanks for all your help
Regards

Colin
