Jobs for a 'on the ramp' day

Post by mickeytwonames »

I am getting my Daimler Consort up on a ramp for a day to check the back brakes and cable.
Are there any job that I should do/look at while I have easy access?
Also, it is easy to top up the suspension dampers and if so what is the best lubricant to use?
    Most grateful for experienced advice.
    Michael

Change the gearbox oil. You need to take the panel out of the floor to expose the filler. Put in a measured amount. It takes 5 pints of SAE 30.
Change the rear axle oil too. Filler also accessed through panel in the floor - under the rear seat. Consorts need 4 pints of SAE 140EP
Dampers - use motorcycle fork oil. It comes in various grades, I used the 15 grade.
Grease everywhere and don’t forget the propshaft universals.
There’s a lubrication chart on DB18.org in the Document Store.
A good place for advice and supply is Classic Oils at Bicester Heritage Centre.

In that case check your brake linings! New self fit linings from David Beales or send them off for new bonded linings to https://www.frictionservicesltd.co.uk
And tyres of course. They may not have done many miles but if they are older than 5 or 6 years you need to have them inspected by a professional. Older than ten years they are liable to side wall splitting and should be scrapped. The year and month of manufacture is on the sidewall.

    Hi Michael
I hope you dont get four pools of oil on the floor as I did after topping up the dampers, renewing the oil seals on the shafts is a right pain.
    Regards David

It is not a job I'm looking forward to - It was hard enough on a Morris Minor - but they do make a difference

Just topped up the steering box oil - or rather filled up an empty steering box. Wait till tomorrow to see if it makes a difference.

I found that the Pennrite Steering Box lube is very good. it is a gloopy liquid grease designed for steering boxes and doesn't leak out.
I wish they made something similar for the shock absorbers!
Good advice re tyres, and if they need changing buy the best you can afford. from another club member's experience, changing over from vintage radials to cross plys gave nothing but trouble and heartache.
