Borg Warner 35 - Auto Gearbox Weight

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

Now and again some Forum users / DLOC members ask for weights on various vehicle components. I thought it may be useful to flag the weight of the Borg Warner 35 auto box which has been removed form my 1968 Daimler V8-250 saloon.

The unit has been weighed dry - i.e. without ATF.

Total weight is 70.2kg which comprises of auto box at 56kg and the torque convertor at 14.2kg - total weight in pounds is 154.4 and does include the bell housing.

I am in the process of converting my Daimler form auto transmission to manual using the Toyota W58 5-speed gearbox. This unit is all alloy, including the bell housing which has been sourced overseas.

The weight comparison is quite striking as the W58 (dry) weighs a mere 41.2kg (90.6 pounds) this equates to a 29kg (63.8 pounds) difference between the two transmissions. There is no doubt the Daimler will be benefitting from the weight saving in addition to another couple of saved kilos when the propshaft is reduced in length slightly, to accommodate the new gearbox.

The above may be of interest to some.

Regards.

Richard.

Does that include flywheel and clutch? The real comparison must include all components, gearbox, flywheel, bellhousing of both boxes.
Owner since the 70's, Genghis is slightly to my left.

No. It is just the weight of the boxes as described.

The thread title is giving notice of the BW35 weight, not as a comparison - I just added the W58 as an additional point of interest.

Regards.

Richard.

Hello Ian,

Further to your enquiry, I have weighed the additional items as a matter of interest.

The auto flywheel adds another 3.3kg to the weight of the BW35 making that 73.5kg in total and yes does include the bell housing and TC

The manual flywheel with the full clutch assembly adds an additional 17.2kg making that 58.4kg in total and yes does include the bell housing.

Comparing those new figures, the weight saving difference is 15.1kg (33.2 pounds) which is still a healthy bonus and of course the benefit of 5x gears rather then just 3x gears.

Hope that assists ??

Hello Richard

Did you manage to remove the BW autobox and leave the engine in-situ?

Hi Richard
Looks like you're BW35 has a cast iron bellhousing, for whatever reason Daimler also fitted BW35 transmission's with an aluminium bellhousing too.
Having recently had dealings with both types,I would say the aluminium bellhousing is at least third of the weight of the cast iron bellhousing, unfortunately I can't weigh the aluminium bellhousing as it's now back in the car

Rob
It is no problem removing the transmission with the engine in situ.

Hello Stu,

Yes, spot-on it does have an iron bell housing which of course makes a heavy unit all the more so. Be it iron or alloy, it is still a 3-speed box; hence you decision to go a different auto route. How's that progressing ??

Rob - yes, as Stu says it is easy to remove with engine left in situ and that is what I did. However, a manual g/box can only be removed with the engine & transmission as one unit; as far as I am aware.

Best wishes.

Hi Richard

To answer your question,it has progressed well and I'm very pleased with my 4 speed Volvo conversion with the bonus of the lock-up effectively giving me 5 speeds, which knocks another 300 rpm off when it engages at about 60mph.

Pulls about 2500rpm at 70mph,big difference to the 4000rpm of the BW35

I've had a good summer for events and put about a 1000 miles on it during which it's been faultless.

I am in the process of writing up a contribution for the club magazine,The Driving Member, which will cover the conversion in detail, but it seems to be turning into something akin to War and peace!

That's great news Stu, well done and worth the effort without a doubt.

I shall look forward to reading the articles in due course and I intend to do the same for the manual conversion I'm currently undertaking; with the hiccup of a cracked block to add to the spice - but that's another story !!

Best wishes and thanks for the update.
