Mixture control (choke!) cable change, saloon

Post by Alpine Daimler »

Anyone out there ever done this?

Mine I believe is a tad too short causing the control lever to be reluctant to return fully to the Run (off) position although no further enrichment is apparent when it goes as far as it wants!

Looks like one of those "devil of a job" jobs which may entail a lot of fiddly removal of side facia of dash and a lot of other stuff which is not one of my "core skills" as some say.

Regards

Hi, yep a right pig, but I found it best to either take that side of the dash out after trying the rear escutcheon nuts were impossible tight, but still had skinned knuckles, make sure you have enough free play in the cable,a small racket 1/4" size helps if doing it behind the dash, but is one job I don't want to do again. good luck.

Hmm, yes, I suppose I should thank you for that reply Buckfield :D , what I expected really!!
I'll get round to that I expect when I have done absolutely everything else and having mentally prepared myself!
Thanks

Hello

I thought I would give an update on this topic as I just spent the best part of the day on this, read on!

It looked quite impossible to me when looking up from underneath the dash so I read up on removing the speedo which did not seem too bad which it was'nt, about an hour and a half. This gave excellent access to the choke cable and bracket at the side facia panel.

I measured the length of the new cable before attaching to the old choke cable (you can tell whats coming!) in the engine bay with tape to, most importantly, smooth out the join, after a bit of careful pulling and pushing managed to draw it through without removing radio, console etc.

Delighted with my success I went on to measure the length of the old cable and compare with new one, result, 15cms longer, very annoying, the new cable is unusable.

The new cable came from one of the usual suppliers (the one with the barely fit for purpose web-site) identified as "Heater/choke cable MK2/V8/E-Type S3".

Anyone out there with any ideas where I can get one which fits?

Thanks for any help.

Rob C. (still fuming!!)

Hi Rob
Couldn't you trim the length of the inner and outer cable at the engine end?

Hello John

I could have made this all a little clearer but my mind was elsewhere!

The new cable is about 6 inches (15cm) too short, the old cable I think is a little too short and tatty.

I'm still incandescent with rage!

Thank you very much Peter, that was an excellent tip, reasonably priced aswell.

I have just ordered the cable and I'm sure it will be an adequate replacement, I just have to fit it....again!!
