Any Lanchester owners near Skipton?

Post by mikemillen »

I realise this is a (very) long shot, but it's worth asking the question...
Is there anyone with Lanchester knowledge living close to Skipton?

I am very interested in becoming the next keeper of a 1947 LD10 that has been in Skipton for the past 40 years, apparently.
You can see the car here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154411813957

I live 300 miles away in Bognor Regis, and I'm not keen on travelling all that way on a potential wild goose chase.
I believe the car is just what I'm looking for... an honest, reliable runner, but I would feel a lot happier about making the trip if someone could take a look and give me an opinion first.
I hope to drive it back to Bognor if all goes well, so sound mechanicals are important.
While I'm happy to maintain & service the car, I'm not looking for a restoration project. :-)

Can anyone assist please?

Many thanks,
Mike

I believe Adrian Hanwell now lives in Scarborough, which is considerably closer to Skipton than Bognor Regis. I would imagine he knows the car as well.

Look through the members' list for Lanchester or LD10 owners in a town near Skipton. It may take some time!

Hi, Just quickly looked at advert. I thought it a little odd to have a photo of the Barker bodied 4 light as this is a Briggs 6 light. Also the drivers manual looks like it is for an LA10. Good luck. You are wise to have it checked out before a long journey. Ranald

Check on DVLA sites shows
https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/?locale=en
TAX - Presently SORN and last V5C was issued 14 February 2021

https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/
MOT - "This vehicle's MOT has expired"
Last MOT 22 September 2012 58,407 miles
MOT history goes back as far as 2005 58,370 miles

So the car has hardly been used in the last 15 years, and also may not have had its status changed to "historic vehicle" with DVLA, which is strange given that the change is a mere formality and easy to do.

I'd contact the seller and ask how long they've had it, where they got it from, and get more pictures taken "today"

David Beales is about 25 miles away http://www.daimlerspares.org/
He may be able to do an inspection for a price.

Thanks for that... I'd already spotted David in the Member's List, but knowing he's a Daimler expert is a bonus.
There's also a member in Keighley who may be able to help.

Yes, it is easy to do. Had to do it on mine.

Also, having the car not used for 15 years should not be an issue as long as it has been rolled and started/run occasionally.

Mine had been in storage for heaven knows how many years before I bought it.

The engine was not difficult to bring back to life, just needed a real good service and fresh fuel.

Look out for the usual chassis rot, interior and roof condition and friendly old wood worm...

Good luck!

Don't forget Beaulieu on 4th & 5th September and perhaps you will join the Poole Bay Classic Car Club https://www.facebook.com/PooleBayClassics/ .
Breamore House shows aren't too far away from you, I normally go to them and meet people from Poole Bay Classics there.
