1966 V8 Saloon Generator Belt Size

Post by Clive » Sat Nov 10, 2018 9:01 pm

Hi,

Does anybody know the original belt dimensions for the fan/generator belt on a V8 Saloon?

The one I took off was an old Dayton 9.5mm x 605mm. The replacement from SNG is 10mm x 617mm (Dayton 10A0617C) and too long - I have the generator set at the maximum adjustment to get correct tension. The old one was in the middle of the adjustment range.

The widths also look to be a bit narrow, although they do not bottom out on the pulleys. I see Dayton sell a 11mm x 610mm x 36 degrees, but I don't know if the V angle is correct (Dayton Part 15240).

I would appreciate knowing what belts others have found suitable.

Thanks,
Clive.

Clive
After ordering a dynamo belt from various places and none of them fitting properly, I measured the width of the pulley and and the length it should be and went to my local motor factors and they looked in their belt catalogue and found me the correct belt just from the sizes I gave them. It fitted perfectly. Worth a try.

Hello Clive,

Further to John's comment, if you take your belt to a motor factor such as EBC they have a the correct tool for measuring the belt. From there they can supply you with the correct dimensions.

Normally a Gates belt will be ideal for your requirement. The belt width should be 9.5mm / 10mm (11mm is too wide) and the length of 605mm is a readily made belt.

Gates make excellent cogged belts so I believe this would be the way forward.

Of interest another good make is Dayco - and for less than £5 this belt may well assist your quest:

Good luck.

Hi From down under,
I recently replaced my 1964 saloon generator belt with a Gates brand belt part no. 13A 0620. The adjustment is about halfway up the slot.
Story.
When I purchased my Daimler about 3 years ago it came with a genuine Jaguar generator belt and some other bits in the boote. Driving it home a distance of about 200km. the generator light came on and on inspection I found the generator belt had failed so I completed the drive home on the battery. At home I fitted the Jaguar belt a bit of a mission getting the fan blades off the pulley. This Jaguar belt has also failed hence the universal belt now fitted.
Regards.
David Bruce.

Hi Guys - thank for your replies.

I went with David's suggestion and can confirm that the Gates belt is a perfect fit - in the US it goes under code 9245 (1/2 inch wide and 24.5 inches effective length).

Interesting to learn that Gates were the innovators in V-belts. On their US website they also have a catalogue giving belt sizes for classic cars - although Daimler is not included; Jags going back to XK120s are listed.

I did a lot of reading on belt specifications - it is complicated with some belt specs being defined by inside length, others by outside length, and then there is effective length and pitch length :? .

Anyway 1/2 wide by 24.5 inches effective length (12mm/0620mm) seems perfect. Other makes also have same sized belt, such as Dayco 17245.

Regards,
Clive.

FWIW, I have had a couple of belts fail over the years, usually when my mechanic friend checks the tension and says it's to loose and proceeds to tighten it. I don't let him near it any more and about 1/2" deflection on the long part is sufficient.

Also Gates belts are coded - 13 (the width at the widest point) A (automotive) 672 (the length in mm).

Cheers

That's interesting Clive, as 24.5" equates to 622.3mm

On your opening thread you stated that the belt supplied from SNG is 617mm in length which was too long and the Dayton you removed was 605mm.

What is the generator (dynamo) position now in relation to adjustment taking up slack in the belt as it stretches natuarally in time ??

The reason I ask is that your dynamo was already set to its maximum to get the correct tension prior to belt removal and your new belt of 622.3mm will take way past that maximum limit.

Many thanks.

Richard.

Hi Richard,

The belt is longer, but being wider it rides higher on the pulleys, which takes up the extra length. The generator is right in the middle of the adjustment range.

just to chime in on different manufacturers products.. Gates make the best and longest lasting drive belts in my experience.. if you have a stockiest that carries them.. that would be my recommendation.. Dayton are also good quality.. cant vouch for others as Ive long forgotten.. Ive used Gates a preference for 30+ yrs..
