Hello,

Investigating some PAS fluid leak, I think I have narrowed it down to one of the 2x hoses that come down from the PAS reservoir.

Checking SNG & DMG website I note they do not list these 2x hoses.

As such, what is the accepted type of hose to use on replacing both of them, please ?? The fact the hoses are secured by Jubilee clips this suggests a hose able to handle low pressure will suffice, but I would like to check before making any decisions.

I'm pleased to say that SNG does stock the high pressure hose between the PAS pump and steering box.

if you have a hydraulics supply place nearby you could try them... both the hoses from reservoir ( one feed to pump.. other return from box ) are low pressure lines.. but they have specific a fitting at steering box end, which can be removed from old hose and re-used ..

Hello,

Further investigation has now identified the issue, there is a leak from the high pressure (HP) hose between the pump and box; to be specific close to the reservoir. That gave the impression one of the reservoir pipes was leaking but that is not the case.

A replacement HP hose from SNG was the answer - but actually no. Although the pipe was listed on their website, they had failed to remove the details as they no longer stock the item.

No problem, because DMG stock them.

All was looking good until I told them my steering box has a female connection, as my original HP hose has male connectors at each end. The upshot is that the HP hose that DMG supplies is only suitable for steering boxes with a male connector - which is shown clearly in the parts manual. In fact the DMG advisory notes state their hose is only suitable for steering boxes with a male end.

My only option is to have one made by a hydraulic company, but I will have to resuse the metal pipe section that goes to the steering box as there is an acute bend prior to the male coupling and the hydraulic company cannot replicate that.

The issue will be resolved, but it has been a real "around the houses brain teaser" to determine a suitable answer.

It is an odd one really, as I was unaware that the steering boxes fitted to these cars may have differing receiving ends - male or female.

If anyone has any input re the issue, please let me know - many thanks.

Richard.. you could replace the internal end fitting into steering box with banjo bolt and 90o or 75o fitting (whichever will work/fit best in situ) at the steering box end.. as long as you have the male end for thread patten, a hydraulic supply house should be able to fabricate this for you.. banjo fitting with 2 sealing washers tends to be superior in sealing than an internal flare fitting of the type used either end of the high pressure line..(the famale hose end more common on box end seals better) the pump end is notoriously prone to leaks.. often requiring a tapered seat washer to seal..

Hello,

The PAS pipe is now sorted.

One of the main issues was the acute angle of the original [metal] pipe which fits the steering box. The hydraulic firms I spoke with were not happy about making such an acute bend especially as they could not get a matching thread for the union - everything else was doable for them.

As such I decided to keep that end of the pipe original. After the new hydraulic parts were fitted, I activated the rusty surface with wire wool, treated the surface rust with nutaliser prior to a couple of coats of black POR15 - superb stuff, which dried nicely in the airing cupboard overnight !!

I do Hhope those end connections will provide a seal for you ..the new hose looks well made and tidy.. BUT..the fitting on pump end looks like it is not deep enough..not wishing to be negative, but it will likely reach end of thead before it seals..(you will find out definitively on installation)
Whilst its still possible to get brake line fittings of equal depth to the originals used on our cars (being located offshore..I have to get them from UK..as current US made brake pipe ends dont fit...too shallow ) ..design of hydraulic fittings has changed over the past 5 decades and almost all supplied today are not deep enough .. so it requires a different approach.. those flare fittings were never very good in the first place..if overtightened just once they will leak. Utilised based on cost rather than quality..

I went through this issue few months back when converting a Mk2 Jag to power rack and pinion... high pressure hose supplied on the kit bottomed out in the pump before sealing ( after the faulty 'rebuilt' steering rack supplied in the kit drained all the fluid on my workshop floor overnight)..the threaded flare nut was approx 1/4 shallower then the original part..so it bottom out before sealing.. I fiixed that male high pressure pump fitting with a copper washer that was conical in shape (supplied by my local hydraulics outfit) which allowed the pipe end to fully cinch up tight and seal, before the threaded union bottomed out in the pump..previoulsy when this issue has arisen Ive changed the fittings to a higher specification .. basically replacing the flare fittings with a different union that seals on outer, rather then inner surface, via copper or composite washer designed for high pressure and adaptor to pipe end.

next conversion I will design myself with flex lines fabricated by local hydraulics shop.... and change all high pressure fittings to banjo type to avoid a recurrence of the issues faced .. which turned a 4 hour installtion into almost 25 hour installation ...

I am glad you have flagged this, it is something that I have considered and, like you, I have a question mark over the seating. I have decided to take the union and machine the face to produce an extra few threads giving a greater thread depth - this will solve the uncertainty and there is plenty of meat left to do that.

Always good to hear a second opinion and I very much appreciate your view on this.
