Lady Docker in the news again

Post by John-B »

Lady Docker has her photo in the Sunday Times today, in a ball-gown dancing at an aristocrat's raucous party at a country house.

It's part of a book review by John Walsh, 'Noble Ambitions, the fall and rise of the post-war country house' by Adrian Tinniswood (Cape £30).

The review is about the ways owners of country houses have tried to keep their houses financially afloat, or not. I don't think a ball with Lady Docker would have helped much. :D

There's a brief biography of her, describing her as "born over a butcher's shop in Derby, the former horizontale Norah Collins married three millionaires, the last being Sir Bernard Docker." He was at one time chairman of The Daimler Company Limited, until she helped to bring the company down by overseeing the production of the magnificent 'Docker Daimlers'.

Could be interesting to read, but I'm not sure I want to spend £30 on it.

Her wikipedia entry isn't very long, but two headings stand out
Separation from BSA
Feud with Monaco

There's a longer, separate entry on the Docker Daimlers

She didn't have any money left in the end. Bernard left in a nursing home in Bournemouth and Norah living in Majorca.

She died at the Great Western Hotel, Paddington alone and largely forgotten.

A few DLOC members (including myself) entertained her for dinner near Lords cricket ground a couple of weeks before she died. She was picked up that evening in a Daimler Empress and was wearing mink as usual!
