Old V5

Post by New Dexter »

I might have managed to sell one of my cars. I have received a deposit and collection might be next week.
However, having found the V5 it's one of the old ones that were revised in October 1992 and thus is not the predominantly red and blue one. The vehicle hasn't been on the road, hasn't had MOT of RFL since before I acquired it in 1983. Can I just treat this V5 in the same way as the new ones? ie just tear off the declaration part, send that to the DVLA and give him the top part?

Hello,

I would say that is absolutely fine.

Importantly the V5 shows the registered keeper / owner ............ which has your details thereon, I presume.

The document provides notification to DVLA that there is a change of circumstances ............... vehicle now has new owner.

One point to check is that the DVLA address is correct, I suggest getting that from your modern car V5C or online.

You can of course notify DVLA of ownership change online, this may be just as effective.

Job done.

Regards.

I suspect doing it on line may be difficult as you will not have that all important up to date registration document number. Syd

Yes, that's a fair point Syd................. out of curiosity I would be interested to know if it did work.

Failing that, good old post and hopefully DVLA will have called off their industrial action.

Regards.

Thank you Gentlemen. One thing I noticed when I checked the DVLA database its that it is showing as not taxed since 1978 which was before I bought it. According to the V5 I acquired it in December 1983. I just hope the DVLA don't start making a fuss.

I'm sure you will be fine.

Many years ago I had a Sunbeam Alpine, one of many, which had not been taxed or anything else for that matter - it just sat in a garage corner. When I checked on the DVLA website prior to selling, it was shown as untaxed and no records held - as in not having come to the notice of DVLA.

Sold the car, submitted the V5 - probably same as your document - and all went through fine.

Owner got a new V5C without a hitch. DVLA are just happy to have vehicles registered and brought up to date for their files.
