Keen Photographer.

Post by Stan Thomas »

Can any keen photographers among our fraternity advise me what a camera is worth which I have inherited?

It is a "brand new" Rolliflex 3.5F with a Zeiss Panar 1.35 f=75mm lens - which my long deceased brother bought over 40 years ago and never used. It's in mint condition complete with leather case and still boxed with instructions, and has a seperately boxed flashgun and alternative lenses and filters etc.

I hope the battery has been removed. Check what battery is required as I found with my 1978 Contax RTS that the battery is unobtainable and so the camera has little value, but the lenses and equipment will still be valuable.

Roliflex don't have batteries - they are hand-cranked to wind on the film and prime the shutter release.

Hello Stan,

Will certainly be worth your while contacting the Vintage & Classic Camera Company, based in the UK at Hayling Island:
https://vintageclassiccamera.com/

Helpful and with useful advice; at least you will get an idea and can progress from there.

Good luck.

I really lusted after one of these in my younger days Stan a really wonderful camera of it's era, if it were mine, I would check with a couple of the specialist vintage on line camera auctioneers for a value and perhaps list it with one of them. Syd

Hello Stan

Analogue photography, one of my other hobbies, I have a cabinet full of working examples bought on the basis of how they look as well as how they are built and operate. I also have a twin lens reflex, a Mamaya C3 6x6 studio camera, a weighty beast but takes wonderful images. A Rollei like yours can be somewhat more valuable due to it ease of handling and transportability, my experience is that we collectors like to know that a camera works especially the shutter speeds, the slower speeds of these "in the lens shutters" can degrade seriously over the years especially if under used. Should you wish to sell you may consider an overhaul and proof of such from a specialist covering all aspects of its detail especially the lens, before entrusting to an "Analoge camera seller" on commission basis.
Looking quickly around on line sellers are asking well over €1.000,00 ....whether they get that is another thing!!

Here is a radical suggestion, why not get a roll or two of 120 film, take some wonderful timeless shots with pleasing color saturation of your, or other folk's Daimlers, family, home, garden, local scenes etc, get the film developed and enjoy that forgotten anticipation of how the shots will turn out, possibly discover a new and growing hobby and then keep and use occasionally, when not in use display somewhere in your home, its always a conversation starter!! Above all your brother would be moved to think you have realised what he, for whatever reason, was not able to achieve.

Stan, should you decide after all to part with this camera the brand Rollei is missing from my cabinet! Contact me if you wish at : robert(dot)chester(at)gmx(dot)de

Regards
Rob C

Good morning Rob,

Thank you for your very knowledgeable and symathetic advice, for I'm afraid you have hit the nail on the head when you remind me of "what my brother would have wanted", as you cannot replace memories with money.

I'll do as you say therefore, and keep you in mind.

Kind regards,

Stan.

I, and perhaps others too, look forward to seeing your results here.

When you take the films to the chemist or one of the many outfits that handle analogue film just ask for "develope only, contact sheet and digitally scanned to CD". There are an number of online providers over here and probably over there aswell.

Here are couple of my Daimler taken with a 'Kodak Retina iiic from the late 50's, a terrific piece of engineering, weighs a ton, I thinks it's made of depleted uranium!
