Clayton Dewandre Servo Specialist

Post by Rolf B. »

Good evening,

some months ago I've read a post, in which a specialist for Clayton Dewandre Servos was named. Unfortunately I can't find the name or the address. As far as I know this specialist is located somewhere in the south east of the UK, maybe Kent.

Any help to find out name and address would be appriciated.

Rolf - is this for a V8 250 ? if so, your best , and cheapest, bet is to fit the uprated servo sold by SNG Barratt

Hello Christopher,

thank you for your reply. No, it's not for a Jaguar derived Daimler. It's for my 1933 Daimler Fifteen with the typical Clayton Dewandre brake Servo unit of the 1920s and 1930s. The condition of this servo is very good, but I need new seals for the piston and the valve system.

Hi Rolf,

What model Daimler is the servo for? If the unti you have is for an early Daimler, I have the service instuction manual for what is termed the "Single Unit Monobloc Type" used up until the 1940's (and beyond?) - for which I will gladly post you a copy. (Does the unit fit under the floor beneath the front seats)?

They are in effect quite simple in construction and not too difficult to service yourself - or by any competent engineering concern local to you.

Could you let us know therefore the model of your Daimler then perhaps someone can identify the model of servo fitted (I can't help there). In the meantime, I'm awaiting a return call from someone who had Clayton Dewandre parts so may be able to help or point you toward someone who can.

Stan.

P.S.
Rig up some way to check the servo "holds" vacuum at the inlet so it is not leaking air into the inlet manifold. although if your car has a vacuum reservoir (very early cars did not) one will be fitted anyway - in which case check it holds vacuum "down wind" of the inlet pipe from the inlet manifold.

Hello Stan,

thank you very much for your efforts and your technical tips.

The Clayton Dewandre servo is belonging to my 1933 Daimler 15 Sports Coupé and it is fitted under the floor of the driver seat. The servo is type 90R as you can see at the attached photo.

The servo is completely dismanteled for internal cleaning and I just need a complete set of seals (piston and valve) for doing the overhaul. Your idea to fit a vacuum reservoir we - my son and I - had too and it will be fitted in the not used, covered ross side spare wheel wells of the car wings. In the left covered spare wheel well we will fit an expansion tank for the cooling system. The new, technical modern components will visually be hidden.

I would be very pleased to get a copy of the service instuction manual "Single Unit Monobloc Type". The servo system is really very simple in construction but I believe the manual will be helpful adjusting the arrangement of levers. Therefore i'll send you a PM.

Best regards
Rolf
