Repair to aluminium housing.

Post by captain bobo »

Over the years corrosion has created a small hole in the aluminium housing for the coolant temperature sensor on my Daimler 15.

I wondered if any of the J B Weld products might repair and seal the small area of damage. If so, which one of their products might be best.

I've sent a message to the company but, to date, no reply received.

Do any forum members have any experience of fixing small corrosion holes in aluminium? All comments gratefully received.
Best wishes, Dave B

Hi Dave good to hear from you again.

Years ago I built up an aluminium water inlet casting for an Austin I owned with fibreglass and resin. It worked well for the two years I had the car, can't say what happened after that but as I say it worked.

There are aluminium epoxy "metal" repair pastes on the market - I use Superfast Aluminium - made by Sylmasta. Have a look on the internet.

If it is a very small hole you may be best enlarging it to give the repair marerial somewhere to bond to - unless you can build up over the surface. If you use an epoxy reipair material, make sure you thoughly clean and abraid the surface first.

Alternatively, you could drill out the hole to accept an aluminium plug then peen over the ends.

Hello,

JB Weld products are excellent.

In your particular case you should use JB Water Weld, which is impervious to water and fuels. Once applied, it is fully cured within a couple of hours and can be sanded, drilled etc. It is aluminium compatible.

Their product code is, I believe, JB8277 or search by name.

You can use JB Weld Steel, but the Water Weld is completely waterproof and as such is the best choice for your situation.

Hopefully the above is of assistance.

Regards.

Hello Dave,

I've got best results in repairing cracks or rebuilding broken off parts, as well as building up aluminium material to strengthen parts by laser welding. The benefit of laser welding is, it is a cold welding without deforming the part by heat. I recommend to look for a company which is specialised in laser welding because they can mill out the corroded surround and fill the hole with new aluminium material by welding.

Regards
Rolf
