Difficulty engaging 4th gear

Post by johnlittle »

Good evening,
I am in the process of recommissioning a new purchase, a BSA 10, and am having difficulty in fully engaging 4th gear. Sometimes it will engage , sometimes it won't.
The peddle travel is much shorter than for the other gears and almost corresponds with neutral. After the peddle is depressed it rises then stops but a very gentle second pressure results in a little further upward travel and this is accompanied by a metallic click from the gear box.
Testing it is difficult because l am having trouble getting the engine to run smoothly. If anyone knows what the correct jet and needle settings for a Solex 26FHG carb for the BSA 10 side valve engine that would help enormously.

John

Your problem is most likely the adjustmemt of the gear-change pedal (not the selector mechanism).

Wear in the gearchange pedal mechanism first shows itself up by the symptoms you describe. What you need to do is adjust the pull-rod to slightly increase the distance the operating arm on the gearbox turns. This ensures the bus bar descends sufficiently to release the current gear change toggle arm and the next gear (top in your case) is selected.

Regarding your poor running, what carburettor have you got?

If you have difficulty, email me at sleevevalve@mail.com and I'll talk you through it.

Regards,

Stan Thomas.
