Hello Steve,

The advantage that Redex has, is that it has dissolving properties and any gumming or build up of carbon within the bores will be weakened by a Redex treatment whereas oil is purely a lubricant.

Once you know the pistons are free to move, any poor compression readings can be further tested by adding a small amount of oil which will either prove or disprove the cylinders condition.
