V8-250 Saloon: Carb Fuel Pipes

Post by classiclife »

Hello,

With reference to the attached photo.

I am trying to determine if the ID of the fuel supply pipe (shown as 2) to the LH carb should be the same as the fuel pipe (shown as 1) from the fuel filter to the RH carb as you look at the photo.

Currently my fitted "Pipe 2" has a narrower ID than "Pipe 1". The set-up may well be correct but there is no info WSM / Parts Manual to determine this.

If someone could check or knows for certain, I will be most grateful.

Thank you in advance.

Best wishes.

Richard.

I have an SP so its a different set up, but I would think that the external dimensions of the inlet and outlet pipes on the 'T' piece that feed the fuel supply to the carbs would determine the ID of both pipes.

Thanks Kevin and that is certainly my next check point; as you say the metal outlets should determine the ID of the hose required.

The reason I queried this, is that "Pipe 2" looks very thin visually, but that said it only needs to feed and ensure the float chamber is adequately supplied.

Best wishes.

Richard,
AFAIK your setup looks correct - the cross-pipe should be 1/4" inside dia to suit the carb inlets, and the main feed should be 5/16" inside diameter.
(The SP is different in that the N/S carb has a "through-T" connection, so the feed from the filter bowl is 1/4" ID, but the feed to the filter bowl is still 5/16" ID)

Hope that helps, and I'm sure someone will chip in if I've remembered wrong!

regards,
John

Fully agree my fuel pipes are as described above.

Just as a matter of interest, the flow potential of a pipe at any given pressure varies as the 4th root of its internal diameter , and thus the 5/16 pipe will deliver slightly under 2.5 times the flow of the 1/4 inch pipe, which corresponds more or less exactly with what has been stated above, where the main feed delivers for 2 float chambers, whereas the cross pipe only feeds one
