Oil rope seal

Post by 99B »

hi, i am having the oil rope seal replaced along with other jobs while the bottom end is off. What i want to know is; is there a special tool to insert the rope seal. I have seen on youtube, people using mandrills and other objects to hammer the seal into place. One site even showed a tool which they had made which fully compressed the seal along its full lenght. Is there a tool particular to the V8? and if so, where can i find one?
Thanking you in anticipation.

Hello,

The rear crankshaft oil seal in the V8 saloon is a two piece rope design. These can be a real headache to fit as the two seal halves require sizing to ensure correct clamping against the rear of the crankshaft and a dedicated sizing tool is used to achieve this. The sizing tool ensures correct concentricity between the main bearing housing and the dimensionally correct oil seal diameter. Incorrect sizing of this rear oil seal will lead to problems - too big and it will leak, too tight it will burn, go hard and leak - it needs to be just right !!

Have attached a couple of photos.

Regards.

Richard.

Hi Richard,
Thankyou for the images. As for the tool, can they be bought or borrowed? Would the DLOC have one that they lend out?
Thanks
Paul

Hello Paul,

As far as I am aware DLOC do not have ownership of tools to lend or hire.

You must be able to purchase them as engineering companies have them - I imagine the item will be expensive and particular to the vehicle application. TBH it is not something I have ever made enquiries about.

My best suggestion is for you to contact an engine building / machine shop in your area to progress the enquiry. I presume your garage does not own such an item ??

Regards.

if you have a 3/4" drive deep socket set, there is usually one that is the correct external diameter to bed the car crank rope seal in, as per the correct factory tool..which is not always possible to find.
