First start after rebuild

Post by Sporty »

Well, the big day finally arrived. Today I finished off the distributor wiring and fitted it back on the engine. That was the last thing before I was left with nothing else to do, no more procrastination, it was time to try to start it up. A few tuns first to prime the oil and get it up to pressure, then a drop of fuel, a squirt of 'Easy Start', and the jump leads off my car to help the old battery I was using. A few turns and a quick adjustment of the timing...and she was up and running. Talk about relieved. After just a few minutes warming her up, she was happy at a steady idle. So, that's one big step forward and there will be some celebrations tonight. Next thing is to rebuild the gearbox and then it can be put back in the car.

Did you use any SAE30 running in oil, what was your method for oil and revs for seating the piston rings etc?

Yes, break-in oil must be used over todays oils. The ZINC in break-in oils saves the cams' lobes and bearings as well as cranks' bearings when first starting a new rebuild and helps keep the hardened surfaces hard. It is changed out after the break-in period and it and the filters contents are examined for any contents. If clear, fill with regular running oil of choice and return engine to its home and confidently boogy on down the road!
