SP 250 LHD Unit count

Post by Bud »

In the attached ad from the original thread it states that some 565 cars with referred to serial numbers were produced as LHD cars for the US market.
Is there any way to confirm this numbers accuracy, and were other LHD serial numbered cars sent to Canada, etc. as the markets demanded?

I clearly remember it being stated that about 1,200 were made LHD.
Laurence Jones is the man to verify this, if his computer will let him join us.

Quite a few did make their way to Canada! Laurence is the man to ask, being keeper of the records if he can get his computer to allow him on this Forum. You can always check your pasSPort to see where they still are now. There are other countries that drive on the left besides the US and Canada.

I am curious to know the original sold numbers per country by dealers.

In: British Sports Cars in America 1946-1981 - (J. Stein - 1993) the author states that 926 cars were exported to the US. That would be from the 1201 total LHD cars built. While within expectations, no documentation for that figure could be found on the book's page which was read at:

https://books.google.com/books?id=y9eVI ... er&f=false

On that page one dealer, RM Grossman, claimed 375 sales.

I searched the old forum but was unable to locate Laurence's explanation of the Reference Number.
It might have been: 1/2/3 where:

1 = Importer
2 = Dealer
3 = Number of cars shipped to that dealer

If so, then the following from the old forum could support at least 320 having been shipped to Grossman:

10/927/320 = Daimler Cars Inc, NY ? / R. M. Grossman Inc ? / 101037
10/927/206 = Daimler Cars Inc, NY / R. M. Grossman Inc ? / 100910
10/927/101 = Daimler Cars Inc, NY / R. M. Grossman Inc / 100782
10/931/35 = Daimler Cars Inc, NY / Overseas Motors Corp, Houston / 100249
? / ? / ? = ? / Charles Hornburg & Co of Los Angeles / 100912

For the /927/ records there is a difference of 219 between the sequence numbers and a difference of 255 between the chassis numbers, where 36 cars from this sequence of this LHD batch could have been shipped to other US dealers or other countries.
Does anyone know the official meaning of the Reference Number?
Could US and other country totals be determined using these numbers?

bill-of-shipping-3-100782.PNG
001 = LHD Show Car = 100010 = Mar 59
559 = 1st LHD batch = 100011-100569 = Sep 59 - Jun 61
565 = 2nd LHD batch = 100760-101324 = Jun 61 - Aug 62
076 = 3rd LHD batch = 101510-101585 = Aug 62 - Jul 64
1201 = Total

I recently asked Laurence why he does not participate in this site and he gave the impression that he is not interested.
He said he much prefers to promote the Daimler SP250 owners club website which has recently appeared.

I tried to get on the new SP website and the password system was beyond me so I will stick here for now. I have contacted Laurence to find out what is wrong.

I'm sorry to hear that Laurence is of that mind.

I've accepted that the old Forum's time had come due to out of date security and other issues.

I registered with the new SP250 site but haven't returned to it for a couple of weeks because the rate of new posts about any topics was so slow, which was surprising. In any event I think Daimler owners should all stick together, whether SP owners or others. Some of us have a foot in more than one model camp.

Cheers

I registered on the new website without any problems, but I agree with Geoff, there is not a lot happening on there at present.
Anyhow, this site seems to be working well and I still regularly access the old forum when I need to check any historic postings.
