Apologies for coming back to the Forum with a cry for help
Mother-in-law died over the summer all I inherited was her rolling pin
Miss her a lot
Life goes on....
My 1952 Consort has been running great - now done three wedding and two funerals - drove 2500 miles over the summer..
Today rasping sound of metal on metal came from...
Behind the fan belt pulley on the crankshaft at the front of the engine there is a housing inside which revolves a small fly wheel (I think)
this appears to have worked lose and is now wobbling and scraping. Car still runs - I drove 30 miles home but it sound terrible and the car turns heads - not in a good way.
Does anyone know if this is...?
1) Terminal
2) easy to fix
3) a Loose nut
4) The work of the Devil.

From your description, you are referring to the crankshaft damper and from the noise, it's making, it has come apart.
Refurbished dampers are available from David Beales and others (I'm sure somebody here will know of alternatives).
It's not an expensive part (but over £100) and I think can be replaced with the engine in situ. With luck Marcel Renshaw will pick up this post and he will know if it's possible.
Don't drive the car though, it won't get better!

I know it's a bit naff but they can and have in the past been glued back together as a temporary measure, but will not work as a damper and because the purpose of them is to finely balance the crank, it could damage the engine.
It is a very specialised job to balance them properly, hence the exchange replacement cost.

Has anyone replaced a damper before?
I believe you have to raise the engine a couple of inches to get the damper over the cross member.
Most grateful for any advice on bear traps along the way.
First job is to get the radiator grill off.

You will need to undue the starting handle nut - so proceed as follows:
Knock back the locking tab (if there is one) on the starting handle nut on the front of the crankshaft, then place a stout snug-fitting ring spanner on the nut and turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation until the spanner touches the chassis.
Check everything is O.K. and well clear - thin dab the starter button.
